The Carolina Hurricanes looked like the team that has built a big lead in the Southeast division in the process of hammering the Washington capitals 5-2. The Canes used 4 second period goals and built a 5-0 lead and Cam Ward was sensational when he needed to be kicking aside 39 shots. The line of Matt Cullen,Chad LaRose and Ray Whitney continues to be a force. Cullen scored his second short handed goal of the season along with two assists, the line accounted for 7 points as LaRose had a goal and an assists and Whitney had two helpers.
The Canes scored two short handed goals, a power play goal and Eric Staal opened up the scoring barrage with a penalty shot (his 28th goal of the season) to give Carolina a lead they would never give up, and played sound defensive hockey in front of Cam Ward. When there were breakdowns, Ward's steady play kept the game even until the forwards took over.
Patrick Eaves continues his solid play of late notching two goals one on the power play and the other short handed, joining LaRose and Cullen as players with short handed goals on the season. Eaves play has picked up since being combined with Rod Brind'Amour.
The Capitals put this game out for the Hurricanes to take and that is exactly what happened. Unfortunately, Florida and Pittsburgh both won to stay ahead of Carolina in the standings. With the trade deadline set for 3pm Wednesday, the Canes might have changed the sign out front of the RBC Center from "no soliciting" to inquire within.
