Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day, Max! Sounds like you have a lot of activities and catching up with friends planned.
I do enjoy reading - I'm reading The Legends Club now and also have Life Is Not a Game (Jay Williams), but will keep your book in mind for a future good read - thanks for the recommendation. Thank you for your service - especially on this Memorial Day weekend.
Maxwell Silver III May 25, 6:59 a.m.
Heading to DC tomorrow, the memorials Saturday, USMC museum in Quantico on Sunday, gathering with a bunch of Viet-Marine vets and on monday have giant cook out, then heading home monday nigh, got two reunions this summer, 3rd bn. 5th Marines in Florida, 1st bn. 5th Marine in ILL. Sept, if you like reading Gunny there is a great book out Road to 10,000 pains about Marines in Vietnam spring-summer of 67
StunGunn May 24, 6:28 p.m.
The fan in me is disappointed with Bradley's decision, but I wish him well. Think he'd improve his game and stock with another year of college ball, but can't blame a guy for going after the NBA $$$. This is a deep draft, and I see him as a late first or early second round pick.
Kind of surprised that Yurksaven is coming back. He knows he'd most likely go undrafted, but I thought he'd play in Europe for a year and then try for the NBA. I wish both players good luck with their decisions.
Maxwell Silver III May 19, 4:17 p.m.
Being in ACC, has help all other sports at ND, they got to see, things are changing-I don't see them in the playoffs without conference affiliation -things are progressing they need to, ACC could work out a deal where they could get 4 NBC GAMES
KT inbound May 19, 10:13 a.m.
Won't be any pressure on ND unless their TV contract (which doesn't renew until sometime in the 2020's) renews for significantly less than it is now. That's the main reason they stay independent.
StunGunn May 19, 9:59 a.m.
Sounds good to me! ECU wanted to be in the ACC, but that would have made five ACC teams in NC, and it wouldn't have changed the footprint for the TV market to grab more money. Would like a North/South division. ACC was a southern conference to begin with. ESPN is over-extended and I wonder how they'll finance the ACC Network.
Maxwell Silver III May 18, 9:30 p.m.
one simple move-change to north and south division, big four all in same division, go ahead and add 1 team to me Cincinnati makes sense, good BB, decent FB, footprint in Ohio put pressure on ND to go all sports.
StunGunn May 18, 4:52 p.m.
It's a travesty that State doesn't play Duke every year. One thing (there are many) that I hate about the expansion of the ACC, is that the Big Four don't get to play each other every year. That special rivalry should have been preserved. The price of "progress", I suppose.
Maxwell Silver III May 18, 7:39 a.m.
over the years coaches have always placed high priority on beating your rival, but they also have had special places for other teams- with Sheridan it was Clemson, Kiffin and Reed just beating anybody was enough, Mike O'Cain was a good person but was a terrible coach, how he lasted 7 years is beyond me, Chuck beating FSU was his mecca, O'Brian took the in-state rivalry to heart probably more than previous, glad to see Doeren putting emphasis on in state shame that we don't play Duke every year, those were some special games-one.
StunGunn May 17, 9:10 a.m.
Wow - going to South Bend should be a great experience, and I bet State wins. I can see where beating FSU and Clemson are more of a feather in the cap of Doeren, but it's the rivalry thing that makes beating Carolina so important. State has won more than they have lost against Carolina in recent history. Agree about Doeren being reserved, but he sure let loose when he beat the Heels this year. He was whooping it up on the sidelines, probably because he had been so heavily criticized in the weeks leading up to that game. Coaches live in a pressure cooker, and I feel bad for the heat their families have to endure when there's a lot of negativity directed toward the coach.
Maxwell Silver III May 14, 7:42 a.m.
last year during football season, you heard more about Gott being needing to do something, Doeren is kind of low keyed football coach not that fiery kind on the sidelines, I like his approach but it may doom him in the end, I like asst coaches to be more demonstrative, one of my favorites was Reggie Herring, you must want to win all games but to me their some that are different -FSU is the big one for me then Clemson and UNC, we got Clemson and UNC at home, would like to have a fourth "big game" only Duke or Miami could fill it. Now if Notre Dame were to Join and we play them every year. This year I am going to South Bend to see the Pack-Irish game. Playing Syracuse, BC, Pitt, G.T.or Virginia is not exciting to me, Louisville, Wake and VT has their moments
StunGunn May 13, 9:27 a.m.
Doeren was on the HOT seat last year. State had a talented team, and they were struggling. Losing to Clemson in OT (thanks to that missed chip shot FG) got to them, I think. But they beat Carolina (hated that, to be honest), and that went a long way to saving Doeren's job. Then State won their bowl, which also helped. I don't care for him - he made beating Carolina his platform, and he seemed to whine about having a young team, etc. when his team struggled. But State finished the season strong, while Carolina tanked. I like Cutcliff the best out of all the local FB coaches. I think he's a good guy who truly cares about his players, and look what he's accomplished at Duke. Just my two cents.
Maxwell Silver III May 12, 10:37 a.m.
This year is a crucial year for Doeren, 8 wins he is secure but can't backslide next year
9 wins and he is safe a couple of years - 6 or less wins I think he can start packing but down deep I feel good about his future, just has taken a while to get things into place.
Maxwell Silver III May 12, 10:31 a.m.
sometimes sleeping giants just keep sleeping-I would not put a lot integrity in the afternoon clowns-don't think Chizik was a great loss, it was a question mark when Auburn hired him, he walked into a great situation and to his credit took advantage of it, he has rode it since then, he was fired at Auburn for a reason. I really didn't think much of Dave Huxtable (I started to say Cliff) at first but must give him credit he has built a darn good defense.
StunGunn May 12, 9:07 a.m.
I heard on the afternoon show that someone called State's FB team a possible "sleeping giant". That remains to be seen, but they do have a lot of returning talent. Carolina lost a LOT of talent this year, not to mention losing Chizik, although the D did take a step back last season, and I don't know why. We have three months before we can even sniff a kick-off.
Maxwell Silver III May 11, 2:12 p.m.
I have read some articles, one from SB nation, said this may the best pack fb team since 2003, well I think they can be good, that team had a outstanding defense and had Phillip Rivers, this team may have as good of a defense and offense will be good but they got no Phillip Rivers, remains to be seen how good they can be and they are also in the division with Clemson and FSU plus Louisville has Jackson.
StunGunn May 11, 1:26 p.m.
If it's more civil now, that's a good thing. I guess we are gaining some wisdom with our age:)
Maxwell Silver III May 10, 5:40 p.m.
back then it was not like it is now, more civil.
StunGunn May 10, 9:12 a.m.
Well, your family sure was divided in the schools they pulled for. Must have been some fun times when the schools played each other. One of my daughters went to Carolina; the other went to State. I'm a Carolina fan, but respect all programs.
I'm not surprised Piccolo got passes. My brother plays adult hockey, and he was talking to a guy who was on one of the school's hockey teams (might have been Carolina, but I'm not sure). Anyway, college hockey isn't like football or basketball in this area, but the kid got all sorts of passes from his professors. This was before everything hit the fan at Carolina, so it may not be the case anymore. It just shows that the student/athletes have it a lot different than non-athlete students.
Maxwell Silver III May 9, 5:27 p.m.
my dad was high school basketball coach both girls and boys won conf championships in both, he was Carolina fan, my brother liked Duke and I liked State, my best friend from 1st to 12th grade like Wake and actually attended Wake had a couple classes with Brian Piccolo, not trying to be mean he said Piccolo was not the brightest bulb in the shop, but always got a pass.
StunGunn May 9, 4:49 p.m.
Wow Max! Looks like you've crossed a lot of events off your sports bucket list! I'm thrilled when I get to a Carolina game. You have some great memories, that's for sure. I'd love to see a Hornets or Panthers game. Your World Series experience - great stuff! And you didn't even miss work! Matt Harvey can't say the same.
Maxwell Silver III May 9, 11:40 a.m.
may have a chance to go to Preakness -not a must see event for me, been to all ACC tour. since 82 except last year and won't go next year (New York is too much baggage) Masters and Brittish Open are still on my list, went to game 6 when Braves beat Cleveland in WS, left work at 12 noon drove to Atlanta, bought a ticket out of Stadium for a $100.00, after game drove back home got a power nap -got to work next morning on time, did same for Super Bowl in Atlanta, no interest in NBA or NHL playoffs, went all 3 US opens in Pinehurst, would like to go Brickyard 500, Masters and B.O.
StunGunn May 9, 9:23 a.m.
Did the same with the Derby. It seemed to start later this year - very muddy track - maybe a rain delay? All the hype and pageantry for a two-minute race. It's fun to watch, but going there is not on my sports bucket list.
StunGunn May 9, 9:21 a.m.
Totally agree about your management style, Max. I only managed a few people (worked for small mom and pop places), but never lorded over anyone. DG always has to remind everyone how important he is. If his producer manages to get in a single syllable on-air, DG talks right over him. Most who work for him are very young and have to take it. Afternoon boys at least let Alec talk and don't put him down.
Maxwell Silver III May 8, 1:51 p.m.
saw where Raleigh golfer fired his caddie in mid round yesterday-these young golfers on tour always blaming someone else, they play a fun game (that most of us pay for play) get paid enormous amounts and whine when things don't go right- that's why I don't care Jordan Speith that much any more, pristine conditions and they beetch-yearn for the days of Jack, Arnie,Phil, Lee and Chi Chi but those days are gone and never to return.
Maxwell Silver III May 6, 10:06 a.m.
I enjoy watching the Kentucky Derby but its 3 hours of hype and less than 3 minutes of the actual event then another hour or so of post race, I just tune in for the 3 minutes! always an event each month Jan new years bowl game and Playoffs, Feb Super Bowl and Daytona, March ACC tour and beginning of NCAA April final 4 and the Masters, May K_Derby Preakness June US open, July Brittish Open, August PGA and Prepping for football-Sept FOOTBALL HAS arrived for the next 4 months
Maxwell Silver III May 6, 9:57 a.m.
I always expected my managers to manage situations and the business end of work and not to get caught up in letting people know I am your boss and can fire you at any time, a manager's responsibility was to run a department, I notice Glenn would always mention someone as an intern and let them know he was boss, I believe being connected on radio show or Journal he would be hard to work for-just my two cents
StunGunn May 6, 9:32 a.m.
The trolls are impossible to ignore. You'll be accepted there because you're a State fan, if I remember correctly, and Duke and State fans seem to get along well, even in the trash forums.
I think Glenn was a nerd as a kid, and ignored by women. Since he's successful now, he has to talk about super models, beautiful women, and all the other brags about starting and owning the ACC Journal, state-wide show, yadda, yadda. Yes, most call up and praise him.
Maxwell Silver III May 6, 9:22 a.m.
I may wrong but I think he has selected people that call in, I have noticed most callers always praise him and if a disagreeing person, he slides out, thanks for the call and then rips the caller when he can't defend himself, Glenn (I am never wrong and I will try to embarrass you if you disagree) only does this when the caller has hung up, I remember one time he was explaining the rules for having a man-card (one was only having two pair of jeans) well when you wear khaki's and preppy shirts all the time, you might only have two pair-I wear Jeans everyday except when playing golf-real men have worked hard in their life and that is one thing Glenn has never done!!!-I may go back to the one of the other forums if this disappears (Duke has less traffic) and just ignore the trolls
StunGunn May 6, 8:40 a.m.
Not close enough, Max! It's pretty much baseball, golf, and another week of re-hashing the NFL draft. There is the NBA, but I keep up watching Mike & Mike and/or Sports Center. I catch Dan Patrick when I can.
I usually tune in the "afternoon boys", and listen less to "The Chosen One". I'm surprised the bragging doesn't bother more people. But I better not say too much more or this forum will disappear too!
Maxwell Silver III May 5, 1:20 p.m.
trying to sign every retired football or basketball, only 10% pan out to decent-Phil Simms was one of the worst, no wonder they kicked him to the curb-their Radio shows are about as bad their TV, I listen college sports- actual games is only decent programming they have, guess you are still listening to the chosen one -football season is one day closer!!
StunGunn May 5, 8:48 a.m.
Agree, Max, and letting 100 people go won't go very far in helping their financial woes. Wonder if this will have an effect on the ACC-Channel deal.
Maxwell Silver III May 2, 11:52 a.m.
ESPN is in money trouble-bet Disney wishes they could dump them -course disney isn't much better - if Walt could come back-he would be shocked at what his company has turned into!
StunGunn May 2, 9:00 a.m.
Agree. He's a good shooter, but he would definitely benefit from another year at State. Yurksaven needs another year as well. I guess they could both play overseas, but that's competitive as well to find a place on a team. D-League doesn't pay, and there are a limited number of roster spots there as well. Really surprised at Rowan, though.
Maxwell Silver III May 1, 2:51 p.m.
can't believe Rowans is thinking about going pro, he is a year or two away from even remotely having a chance
KT smakt your mom Apr 29, 11:29 a.m.
somebody has to keep the hole trolls in line. the best way to do so is to insult them.....well it's not really insulting them so much as dropping the truth in their laps.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 28, 9:22 a.m.
I don't know where Watson was Drafted but I think is gonna be a star kind of like Russell Wilson
Maxwell Silver III Apr 28, 9:20 a.m.
they got a Transfer from Baylor, I like what Keatts said he would not take transfers just to get bodies, with what he has got if necessary, got 10 scholarship players, didn't even watch the draft, ESPN has turn this like a lot of other things they do " a spectacle " they have ruined the Heisman award-I seen where they cutting people (some name people) they have tried to get cute over the years and gotten away from what made them popular SPORTS- name dropping with hollywood and music lowlifes- I do not watch ESPN unless its a game that I want to see, then I will go and watch it at a local sports bar. I thinks Keatts should have a decent year next but then his recruiting should come into play.
Some of the ESPN people think its all about them-about the only people I like at ESPN are Chris Fowler, Mark Maye, Herbstriet, people like Vitale, Bilas and others have tried make it about themselves being a star.
StunGunn Apr 28, 9:04 a.m.
Didn't Keats land a really good transfer as well? Will be an interesting year.
As for the NFL (still can't believe there's no Panthers forum with the draft going on), I like the Panther's choice. They have a lot of needs, and RB was definitely one that needed to be filled. Ironic that Glennon and Trubisky are now teammates.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 27, 2:36 p.m.
I assume Malik Abu is coming back, did not see where he mention testing the draft, with him and Lennard Freeman inside if Kapita Comes back, think Johnson is the key as to how good this team can be.
StunGunn Apr 27, 11:00 a.m.
I think more and more guys want to test the waters, especially with the new rules that allow them to test as often as they want. Kapita is no where ready for the Pros, but he does have potential. I think he'll return. Yurtsaven needs another year as well - he struggled in the ACC, but will be better this year. His length may tempt some teams, but he won't be a first round pick IMHO.
I'm not going to watch the NFL Draft tonight, but it will be interesting to see where some of the guys end up. Still surprised at how high Trubisky will most likely go. Good kid, but it's a big question as to his true potential.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 26, 3:23 p.m.
just saw where Ted Kapita is gonna test the waters, don't think he has the kind of resume to lead a team drafting, may try him out as a free agent, he seems the type that could improve each year, if he heeds the advice he gets, he should come back. I have saw improvement in Abu each year, he has added a mid-range jumper and foul shooting has improved-Kapita should look at Malik as the future.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 26, 1:54 p.m.
Yurtseven should return I don't think he is ready, with all thats coming out I think will be late second round at best, Keatts was put in a bad spot with Allen backing out but Batts was an upgrade, next year will be interesting
StunGunn Apr 26, 9:40 a.m.
I was hoping Allen would leave, but it's a deep draft, and he might have been advised to clean up his act before going Pro. I doubt he can control himself for an entire year. Can't stand him.
I was wondering about Abu as well. Maybe he likes Keats and is going to stay? Did he already declare? The deadline was Sunday night, I believe, so unless he's already said he's testing the waters, he can't go to the NBA. I seem to recall he was going to test the waters, but that was right after the season was over. He'll be missed if he leaves. Rowan surprised me as well. I think a lot went on behind closed doors that we'll never know about.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 25, 8:15 p.m.
Lot of players see $ sign and a friend says yea I see you could go high-what has surprised me is Mav Rowan deciding to leave, Thomas Allen backed out of his recruitment, but it worked out, surprised that Abu has not said anything yet, if they can hang on Johnson and Kapita should be ok for next year, don't blame players for testing waters as long they take the advice they are given by pros, I see we will be graced by Dukes Allen for another year, hope he uses it to show a decent side of him- but I doubt it!
StunGunn Apr 25, 7:08 p.m.
Oh he doesn't limit it to the first 15 - 20 minutes. It got unbearable at about 2:30. Had to turn down the volume and turn up the volume of ESPN.
On another note: I'm really surprised that Joel Berry reversed his decision to test the NBA waters and return for his senior season. I don't think he expected to be a first round pick, but what else does he have to prove? I'm just glad he's coming back!
Maxwell Silver III Apr 25, 4:23 p.m.
must be listening to Glenn, does he still do the self promoting 15-20 min at beginning of show
Maxwell Silver III Apr 25, 4:20 p.m.
Ryan Leaf is probably the one example that points "what you see is not always what you get" firmly believe if you are a bad apple then you are probably gonna continue to be a bad apple--wonder how many that could have been a great player, slipped thru the cracks never to be heard from again
StunGunn Apr 25, 2:40 p.m.
Speaking of that word you can't spell correctly, I'm listening to it now. More self promoting and bragging. I just lowered the volume.
The world IS a better place without Hernandez in it IMHO. Guy kills three people and he's a saint in death. He got away with double murder.
Anyway, yes, look at Seattle and RW. Talk about a bargain with his rookie contract. I like that Texas Tech QB. Saw him on Dan Patrick today. Smart kid.
I don't think the Panthers will have a good year. Looks like the Saints are stocking up.
Maxwell Silver III Apr 25, 1:45 p.m.
the draft is a krap shoot, who knows look at all the top 5 pick that have bust and 3rd round on down that have done extremely well, listen to sirius a lot, Taylor who used to local is ok at times, he had David Glenn on as the one man that knows the triangle area inside and out, that is what self hype will do. I really like Mark Packer, Packer was taking ESPN to cleaners for the way they almost were glorifying Hernandez in death, Packer said the world is better place with him not in it. I was called out for spelling krap the right way
