The Carolina Hurricanes signed forward Jiri Tlusty to a two-year contract the team announced Tuesday. The deal will pay Tlusty $1.5 million in 2012-13, and $1.7 million in 2013-14.

“Jiri had a very good season and showed that he can contribute as a top-end NHL forward,” said president and general manager Jim Rutherford. “He should continue to be an important part of the Hurricanes coming off of his career year.”

Tlusty, 24, posted career highs in games played (79), goals (17), assists (19) and points (36) in 2011-12, ranking fourth on the team in points, tied for fourth in assists and fifth in goals.

The Slany, Czech Republic, native ranked tied for second among all Carolina skaters with 15 even-strength goals, and the Hurricanes earned points in 15 of the 17 games in which he earned an assist. Tlusty (6’0”, 209 lbs.) played his 200th NHL game on Jan. 23 against Winnipeg, and has scored 34 goals and earned 40 assists (74 points) in 229 career NHL games with Carolina and Toronto.

The Maple Leafs drafted Tlusty in the first round, 13th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, and he was acquired by Carolina via trade on Dec. 3, 2009.

RE: Canes sign Jiri Tlusty to 2-year deal

Tlusty has really stepped up this year. Tlusty proved that he could be a top line player if needed and is playing pretty darn good two way hockey. If we get that top line winger to go with Staal, and make some other moves during the off-season then he may end up playing on a different line, but Tlusty can be a very good 2nd or 3rd line player with the skills to play on the 1st line when needed. Tlusty also helped get Staal back into gear. Even if that was the only thing he did this season, it would be worth the contract.

I think they should pay the 24 yr old twice that, because I'm sure it will be very hard for him to live on just $3.2 Mil for two whole years. I'm glad I dont have to squeezzzzz like that. And to just hit a little black puck thingie.. what's is college background like, his degrees etc.

I got an idea, how bout you play hockey and live on the ice from age 4 to 18. than when you turn 18 if you are one of the top 500 players in the world you can get you a 1.5 million dollar contract without partying and wasting money in college. It's gonna be tough cause theres a million people trying to get this job and you gotta be top 500. than all the people that went to college come and pay to see you play a game on friday night and get your body smashed and teeth knocked out you know you've earned your money....no doubt. Now 25 mil a year for shooting ball into hoop and being tall enough to slam dunk.....thats ridicolous.

Good post but I wouldn't say Jiri did it without partying, a quick google search will prove that one false.

Good signing, if he continues his progress he will be a bargain at this price.

Well, I'm glad to hear that Jiri could party AND play hockey - all the power to him! I'm glad he was signed as well.

RE: Canes sign Jiri Tlusty to 2-year deal

Nice to get him for 2 more years. Jiri may be one that sticks even after this one. JR took a chance on him when Toronto had given up on him, and some times that will mean more to a player then other, similar to Ruutu. One thing JR has been able to do is find guys that some teams have given up on turn them into good players. The book is still out on Nodl and if he can do the same with him or if he sticks if we do make a move for a top 9 forward.
Daydremn get a clue, hockey contracts are far more reasonable compared to the other major sports especially baseball and basketball.
