The NHL free agent period opened at noon Sunday and the Carolina Hurricanes found themselves active, but not making a big splash outside of resigning their own.

Hurricanes general manager and president Jim Rutherford said earlier in the day that the organization has had contact with the top two free agents; forward Zach Parise and defenseman Ryan Suter.  After the Canes made official offers to both Parise and Suter, Parise's agent informed the Hurricanes that he was going to go in another direction.

Rutherford said he believed that Suter would make his decision tomorrow. If Suter decides to sign with another team the Canes will turn their focus to other unrestricted free agents.

The team started the day signing the newly acquired Jordan Staal to a ten year deal worth $60 million. That takes any drama out of how the Canes would deal with the younger brother of captain Eric Staal and his expiring contract. Jordan will be playing out the last year of his contract worth four-million dollars this season, the ten year extension starts in the 2013-14 season. That was the same offer reportedly on the table from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rutherford said he believes the addition of Jordan Staal has made Carolina more attractive to the free agent group.

Staal will continue to wear an 'A' on his jersey, retaining his alternate captain status.

As the day moved on the Hurricanes brought back defenseman Joe Corvo to add his right handed shot to the blue-line and power play. Corvo agreed to a one year deal worth two million dollars with a no-trade clause.Corvo was last with the Hurricanes for the 2010-11 season.

In nine NHL seasons, Corvo (6’0”, 204 lbs.) has scored 83 goals, earned 200 assists (283 points) and posted a plus-35 plus/minus rating in 643 regular-season games with Los Angeles, Ottawa, Carolina, Washington and Boston.

The Canes also re-signed goaltender Justin Peters to a two year deal, worth 1.75 million dollars. The first year of the deal is a two way contract, the second season is an NHL level deal only.

Peters, 25, split the 2011-12 season between Carolina and the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.Peters has appeared in 28 career NHL games, going 11-11-3 with a 3.23 goals-against average. He will fill the void at net after goalie Brian Boucher injured his shoulder a week ago and is expected to miss 4-6 months.

The organization also announced that forward Brett Sutter agreed to a one year deal, worth $550,000 in the NHL, $105,000 at the AHL.

Sutter, 25, completed his fifth professional season in 2011-12, spending the majority of the year with the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. The Viking, Alb., native notched three assists in 15 NHL games with the Hurricanes, and averaged 7:34 in ice time per game. On the AHL level, he totaled 13 goals, 16 assists (29 points) and 58 penalty minutes in 63 games, and served as team captain for the Checkers.

why, because I didn't agree with your opinions?

Glad they locked Jordan Staal up, but Corvo? What about Ray Whitney????

Did you see what he's getting paid to go to Dallas? That's why we didn't pick him up. 4.5M for a 40 year old is almost unheard of. His agent deserves a raise.

Totally agree with this one. Way too old for this amount of cash.

RE: Canes sign Corvo, waiting on Suter

I agree with ktstcanes and caniacman. This is the first year I've seen JR go after a big name player with the money to back it up. I agree that this is a small market and will always have a limited budget. The fact that Parise and Suter and other big names don't want to come to Raleigh shows what the Canes' reputation is. The big names want to play for the big teams who are Cup contenders year after year. Getting Jordan Staal is great, but if Eric wasn't already here, I doubt he would have agreed to the trade. But he did agree and he is here and I'm happy about that.

I think one of the best things JR did was hire Muller as the HC. I like what I see in him and what he's done so far in his short tenure with the team. If anyone can turn the team around, Muller can. I'm optimistic, but realistic about the future of the team. I do think this team is a playoff contender for sure, and I'm excited about the season.

BTW, I love the J Staal acquisition. I also think in the last few years our scouting department has gotten MUCH better. The Igor Kynazev, David Tanabe's, and the other first round picks we have waisted through the years have not helped. AT ALL....................
