Staal's status unclear, Canes' GM looking to make personnel moves

Winless in their last nine games, the Carolina Hurricanes' terrible start has general manager Jim Rutherford interested in shaking up his roster.

The Canes' GM joined The Insiders on 99.9 FM The Fan on Monday.  Rutherford says the team isn't sure about the injury status of Eric Staal, but he's looking at some potential roster moves regardless.

"I had hoped to wait until the end of November to really see if the team could come together," Rutherford told The Insiders.

"Here we go again, with the injury to our best player.  So, I'm starting to talk to other teams a lot more now.  And, I'm embarrassed to say that this early in the season."

It has been more than three weeks since the Canes won a game, Oct. 9 against the Panthers.

"It's just figuring out how to win one game, and at least getting some breaks in a game that we can win,"  Rutherford said.  "We get absolutely no breaks at all, but that goes with losing.  Our discipline's not good, we're taking way too many penalties.  Everything that can go wrong, is going wrong."

After a dreadful October in which the Hurricanes went 2-7-3, November got off to a rough start too.  The Canes dropped a home game to the Sharks 5-1 and may have also lost Staal for a few games.  Rutherford wasn't certain regarding Staal's status as of Monday afternoon, but said the team's trainers weren't optimistic after Sunday's injury.

"Right after the game they were saying that they felt he would miss some games,"  Rutherford said.

only one move needs to be made... new coaching staff, sorry, RF and coach Mo - but your outdated, defense - only scheme will NOT work in the NHL anymore - there are too many good snipers out there that can put the puck in the back of the net through a collapsing D - teams figured out how to beat your system YEARS AGO!!! find a new home guys... until then the fans will continue to see feigned injuries by players, good players sent or run off... and the team will continue to do poorly - heed my words - unless the coaching staff returns to a system that works the team won't win many (as it looks right now it may just be "ANY")games

I think everyone is hanging Cam out to dry. Just how is he not doing his job?? I think he has tried to keep us in several games, but we haven't been scoring in those games! Where is the offense? Cam is doing all he can do, so ya'll shut it up about the job Cam is doing. No one on this team is working hard to get wins. Look at the final scores and tell me where are all the goal scorers. We have no offense.

I think many GM's would agree with you. Unless you are giving up A.O I don't think we could make that trade :-)

The player that has to go is Joe Corvo. Joe is a cancer to this team and has been every since he had that interview in game 3 against the Pens. Where he had already Given up. Last Sunday, his unwillingness to bring the puck out from behind the net is just an example of how he is single handly hurting this team. Get rid of Corvo bring back Casey Bowyer and let's see if this team can rebound.

I was at the game and the reason he did not bring the puck out from behind the net is because the other players on the team were not in position. He was merely trying to avoid a turnover. He was not the only one, Pitkanen did it as well. behind the net is the safest place on the ice when trying to reset your offense, you have the goalie and the goal between you and the opposing player. You have control of the puck, a full view of the ice and time to make a decision about how to play the puck.

That may be true but the opposing team was laying on the boards at the blue line, he had wingers on both sides of him and had the center of the ice open and he did not move. We got him because they said he was a puck handling defenseman. If he can't bring the puck up from behind the net then there is a problem. No, I still say he is a cancer to this team, him and his attitude needs to go. Once a quitter always a quitter.
