The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled forward Zach Boychuk from the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League, team President and General Manager Jim Rutherford announced Thursday evening. Boychuk will be eligible to make his NHL-season debut when the Hurricanes host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday at the RBC Center.

Boychuk, 20, is in his first full professional season and has scored four goals and earned five assists (9 points) in 12 games with the River Rats.

Carolina has several injuries along its front line, including those to Eric Staal, Ray Whitney and Tuomo Ruutu - the status of all three players' availability for Friday night's game against Toronto is in question.

rick flair, whooo! hate to burst your dellusional bubbles, but he is not actually a hockey coach. paul maurice isn't one either, for that matter. i haven't seen it so bleek in the ESA, er, RBC center since SCOTT STEVENS ENDED RON FRANCE'S CAREER with an awesome hit! maybe if you that extra loud arena filled up with the state fair rejects you'll win a game. oh wait, that would require attendence of more than 10,000 before the playoffs start.

A Kings fan on here no doubt, because if you were an Anaheim fan you wouldn't be here bashing. It's funny how fans mouths run when there having a descent season. ( so far ) Where were you last year ? Oh yeah, the Kings were dead last last year. You seem to be very aware of the Raleigh area. What, did you some way get a hold of some money and move to Beverly Hills ? NERD !

The Toronto Star is reporting that both Whitney and Rutuu skated this morning and will probably play tonight. They also state that Staal is out 2-4 weeks with the upper body injury.

RE: Canes recall '08 first-round pick Boychuk

"this season is pretty much a done deal"

While I certainly agree that things look very bleak right now, it's not too late to salvage the season. It took 93 points to get into the playoffs in the East last season. If the 'Canes can go 39-21-8 the rest of the way, they'd have 93 points. I think the players on this team are capable of doing that, though certainly not the way they're playing right now.

Things looked pretty bleak last season in late February too, with the team not playing well and appearing unlikely to make the playoffs, then they went 13-1-2 over the next 16 games and won two rounds in the playoffs. Though it won't be easy, the playoffs are not impossible yet, but the team needs to get things turned around very soon or it will be too late. Having Staal, Whitney, and Ruutu all out is going to make it tougher. Staal and Ruutu haven't been doing much so far, but we know they can and any day could be when they start to show that again.

Well, so what that Ruutu, Whiteny, and Staal are out. Was the team doing anything with them playing??? NO!!!
What a great opportunity for the young kids in Albany to play in the NHL. It's also a good chance for the Canes to see how their prospects will play in the NHL because this season is pretty much a done deal for the Canes.
