Ward still in hospital, Rutherford looking for another goalie
By Ken Medlin Nov 8, 2009
Raleigh, N.C. — Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward will remain in an Ohio hospital for another night and could be out for a month. Canes general manager Jim Rutherford told WRAL Sunday night he is looking to trade for another goalie with Ward out.
Ward suffered a laceration of the left upper leg from the skate of Columbus forward Rick Nash, as Nash passed through the crease during the first period of Carolina’s 3-2 loss to the Blue Jackets on Saturday night. He was originally expected to return to Raleigh on Sunday, but will remain in Columbus at Riverside Methodist Hospital through tonight to guard against infection.
Ward is expected to return to Raleigh on Monday, where he will be evaluated further by Dr. Marty Isbell. The goaltender is expected to miss a minimum of three to four weeks of action.
Ward's injury comes during the worst start in Hurricanes franchise history. The Canes are mired in a 12-game winless streak, and the loss of their franchise goaltender leaves a vital position in limbo.
"After what we've been going through, this is a critical situation," Rutherford.
Rutherford says the Hurricanes may call up goaltender Justin Peters from Albany to back up Michael Leighton, but their primary focus will be to obtain another netminder through a trade.
"We're looking outside of the organization," Rutherford said. "That's what I've been working on all day, and we hope to get something done."

The difference is that basketball and football were adopted here, whereas, as my esteemed colleague jackaroo2 states, hockey is regularly shoved down our throats. It is a byproduct of the culture of greed and stress permeating the Triangle area. North Carolinians never asked for hockey. Northeasterners squatting in North Carolina did.

Well, I don't even know if it's that. I think collegiate basketball in the triangle was adopted because the teams were always known for being winners and the tickets were cheap. The Charlotte Bobcats are hurting in attendance and wins. So it's not just the sport. It seems as long as teams are winners, the area will support them.

Carolina basketball is just a few weeks away, yes the national champions. The Know it all wral, N&O give way too much sports coverage to this useless sport....this is the south. Can you show me one local hockey rink?

Stop fighting the civil war dude. Your old school. One local hockey rink ? You don't get out to much do you ? Your pitiful.

While the civil war argument was moronic at best... I'll name seven rinks... Cary Ice House, Garner Ice House, The Factory, IcePlex, RecZone, and the Hillsborough Ice Rink. I play at two and I can tell you that they are booked with local hockey until the wee hours of the mornings 7 days a week. It may not be like up north... but don't discount the hockey base here.

Yes, hockey gets SOOO much more coverage than basketball and football. I'm sure football was adopted INSTANTLY in the south when the Connecticut born Walter Camp pushed it nationally.

What a total embarassment you are. I am a NC native and I love hockey and the Canes. I don't think jackaroo is the name you should be going by.
Jackaroo, I'm with you. Northeastern influence has been steadily eroding our culture (ie, high cost-of-living, pollution, congestion, toll roads, the disappearance of fiscal responsibility). The Hurricanes organization is just another cog in that machine.
As a Civil War history buff, it sadly reminds me of Stonewall Jefferson's march on Atlanta.

Total embarASSment is right. I'm a nc native and I'm embarassed by the fact there are still idiots like you still fighting the civil war. Basketball wasn't invented in the triangle area.
