The upper body injury to Canes goalie Cam Ward is significantly worse than was first thought, Carolina Hurricanes TV play-by-play voice John Forslund told 99.9FM the Fan ESPN Radio Saturday.
Ward has a fairly significant back injury and will be evaluated early this week by a specialist, Forslund said. It is unclear how long Ward will be out, but it appears that it will be longer than originally anticipated.
Ward suffered a back injury during last year's Eastern Conference Finals against Pittsburgh, but this injury is not thought to be related.
Ward missed 13 games earlier this season after he was cut on the leg by Rick Nash's skate blade in Columbus Nov. 7.
Since returning Ward had played his best hockey – appearing in 23 straight games before being sent back to Raleigh before the game in Buffalo on Friday. Ward has a 14-21-5 record this year with a 2.74 GAA in 41 games.
