Jim Rutherford, president and general manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, revealed Monday the logo for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, to be held Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at the RBC Center.
Rutherford also announced that a promotion for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game will adorn Raleigh's tallest building and feature the Carolina Hurricanes' Eric Staal.
A 5,000-square-foot window treatment will be displayed on the west side of the RBC Plaza, facing Fayetteville Street. The graphic includes images of NHL All-Stars Eric Staal, Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Patrick Kane, along with the 2011 All-Star Game logo. The window treatment will be applied this week, and completed during Raleigh Wide Open 5, to be held on Fayetteville Street on Saturday.
The All-Star Game will bring increased publicity league-wide, nationally and internationally as it will be broadcast in more than 180 Countries.
Harvey Schmitt, president of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, says the community should be excited, “Anytime we’re able to host an international event with the kind of media coverage this will pick up, it’s useful for us in establishing the brand.”
The festivities will bring a major economic impact to the area. Previous cities have reported anywhere from $10 million to $20 million in visitor spending.
The NHL has already booked more than 2,000 rooms at seven different hotels for the weekend.
Raleigh Wide Open 5 will mark the first opportunity for fans to purchase 2011 All-Star Game merchandise, including T-shirts, hats, golf shirts, pucks, mini hockey sticks and lapel pins. The merchandise will be available at “Hurricanes Alley” at the corner of Martin and Fayetteville streets.
Rutherford said the Hurricanes will be able to benefit from the sale of All-Star merchandise. “We do get the revenue for All-Star memorabilia up to a month before the event.”
Rutherford also said that he spoke with Canes owner Peter Karmanos earlier Monday and that there is nothing new on the possibility of a minority sale of the Hurricanes. Karmanos announced in May that he was exploring the option of bringing in a partner to own a minority share of the organization.
The 2011 All-Star Game logo was designed and created by the NHL and is property of the NHL.

Can't wait for the events to hit Raleigh.
and the month is July...what's your point yank. people can have opposing opinions and the attendance last year spoke volumes...they were giving away tickets just to fill the bottom sections.
Does the banner HAVE to have Ovie on it? I know he's a great player, but I can't stand him.- Posted by cfarmer
