Joslin agrees to 2-year deal with Canes

Posted July 8, 2011

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Derek Joslin on a two-year contract. The deal will pay Joslin $650,000 in 2011-12, and $750,000 in 2012-13.

“Derek is a young defenseman who played well after joining the Hurricanes last year,” said Rutherford. “He has now put himself in a position to be a full-time NHL player.”

Joslin, 24, played in a career-high 34 NHL games in 2010-11, splitting the season between San Jose and Carolina after being acquired by the Hurricanes via trade on Feb. 18. In his 17 games with Carolina, he scored one goal, earned four assists (5 points) and compiled a plus-7 plus/minus rating, while averaging 18:03 of ice time per game. The Richmond Hill, Ont., native made his NHL debut with the Sharks on Jan. 3, 2009, and has scored two goals and earned 10 assists (12 points) in 70 career NHL regular-season games. San Jose drafted Joslin (6’1”, 210 lbs.) in the fifth round, 149th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
