Canes agree to terms with Brandon Sutter

Posted July 13, 2011

— The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with center Brandon Sutter on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Sutter $1.5 million in 2011-12, $2 million in 2012-13 and $2.7 million in 2013-14, Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced Wednesday.

“Brandon is one of the cornerstones of our franchise moving forward,” Rutherford. “He is an extremely intelligent player who can perform in all situations, and has already grown into a leadership position for the Hurricanes at a very young age.”

Sutter, 22, established career highs in games played (82), penalty minutes (25) and plus/minus rating (+13) in 2011-12, his third NHL season with the Hurricanes. Born in Huntington, NY, but raised in Red Deer, Alb., he totaled 14 goals and 15 assists (29 points) and led all Carolina forwards in shorthanded ice time (2:21 per game). Sutter (6’3”, 183 lbs.) also led all Carolina forwards and ranked tied for seventh among NHL forwards in blocked shots (73), and was first on the team in plus/minus (+13).

Sutter skated in his 200th NHL game on April 2 against the New York Islanders, and the Hurricanes were 11-0-1 when he scored a goal during the 2010-11 season.

Sutter was drafted in the first-round, 11th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Since his draft, Sutter has totaled 36 goals, 39 assists (75 points) and 43 penalty minutes in 204 career NHL games with the Hurricanes. He has represented Canada in a number of international competitions, including the 2007 Under-18 World Junior Championship and the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series, and won a gold medal with Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championship. Prior to turning professional, Sutter completed a four-year junior hockey career with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League (WHL), totaling 68 goals and 86 assists (154 points) in 205 games.

The Carolina Hurricanes will open their 2011 exhibition schedule on Sept. 19 at Buffalo.

I've noticed JR gets some heat from fans from time-to-time. I actually think he's pretty solid at his job.

The Hurricanes seem to love the Sutters ..... there were several in the NHL years ago that were spread out among several teams. I think the Canes want the next generation of Sutters all to themselves.

Good move - he seems to be the steady influence and glue that holds the team together.

Have the Canes reached the MINIMUM salary cap floor yet?

Great signing and hope to see Sutter have a great year. Still would like to see a top six forward added before the season starts.

Not just the money side, he's a genius anyway.

JR is a genius when it comes to the money side. Future is VERY bright!

Agree with all of the above, the Sutter haters just see his point total and not the other stuff he does! JR wanted to lock him up long term but the agent would only do a 3 year deal. My only concern is in 3 years the agent wants him to go elsewhere and after the 3 years he still is only 25 years old! Sutter, Skinner, Dalpe and Boychuk what a great young core up front.(Not counting others that are young with potential as well) McBain, Murphy, Faulk, Alt and Lowe on the D side. All 8 of these kids are solid and 22 and under. Please Canes fans see why the future is VERY BRIGHT for this team. This is why JR is not spending the money now on over priced free agents. When these 8 players come off their rookie contracts we will have to spend the money then.

One of the smartest guys on the ice. Not flashy but good honest hard playing hockey player. And a nice guy. Show me another 22 year old making $1.5M a year who asts as humble as he does in public? That is why I wear #16
