— Ron Francis, Director of Hockey Operations for the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed left wing Brett Sutter and forward Chris Durno and agreed to terms with defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti all to one-year, two-way contracts.

The Sutter deal will pay out $525,000 on the NHL level or $75,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $105,000 for the season.

“Brett performed well for the Checkers last season, especially in the playoffs,” said Francis. “He will have an opportunity to compete for time on NHL level this season.”

Durno's deal will pay him $525,000 on the NHL level or $105,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $140,000 for the season.

“Chris is a big, strong guy that will provide more depth up front,” said Francis. “He has good hands and will bring leadership and veteran experience to our organization.”

The deal for Sanguinetti will pay him $600,000 at the NHL level, and $62,500 at the minor-league level for the 2011-12 season.

“Bobby played well in Charlotte last year despite missing more than half of the season with a difficult injury,” said Francis. “He worked hard to come back and to be able to contribute to the team late in the season. We look forward to his continued progress in his career.”

Sutter, 24, was acquired by the Hurricanes on Nov. 17, 2010, from the Calgary Flames, and spent most of the remainder of the 2010-11 season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Viking, Alb., native totaled nine goals and 12 assists (21 points) in 60 regular season games for Charlotte. He also played five games on the NHL level with Calgary and Carolina, earning one assist with the Flames and making his Hurricanes debut on Feb. 12 at Tampa Bay. Sutter (6’0”, 200 lbs.) notched 14 points (4g, 10a) in 16 Calder Cup playoff games for Charlotte, and was the Checkers’ leading scorer during their run to the conference finals.

Drafted by Calgary in the sixth round (179th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter has totaled one goal, one assist (2 points) and 12 penalty minutes in 19 career NHL games with Calgary and Carolina. In 272 career regular-season AHL games with Quad City, Abbotsford and Charlotte, he has notched 80 points (32g, 48a) and 266 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, Sutter played four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Kootenay and Red Deer, tallying 138 points (58g, 80a) and 274 penalty minutes.

Durno, 30, totaled 19 goals, 17 assists (36 points) and 120 penalty minutes in 73 AHL games in 2010-11, serving as the captain of the Norfolk Admirals. The Scarborough, Ont., native has played 43 career NHL games, all with Colorado, totaling four goals, four assists (8 points) and 47 penalty minutes. He set NHL career highs in games played (41), goals (4), assists (4), points (8) and penalty minutes (47) with the Avalanche in 2009-10, also making his Stanley Cup playoff debut against San Jose in the Western Conference Semifinals.

In 366 career AHL games with Milwaukee, Norfolk, Portland, San Antonio and Lake Erie, Durno has totaled 108 goals, 103 assists (211 points) and 519 penalty minutes. He set AHL career highs in games played (80), goals (23) and points (49) with San Antonio in 2007-08, and helped Milwaukee capture the Western Conference championship in 2005-06. Durno has also played 147 career ECHL games, all with Gwinnett, totaling 52 goals, 72 assists (124 points) and 166 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, he played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Michigan Tech, notching 48 points (22g, 26a) in 130 games. Durno’s complete career statistics are below.

Sanguinetti, 23, played in 31 regular-season games with the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League affiliate Charlotte Checkers in 2010-11, scoring three goals and adding 12 assists (15 points). The Trenton, NJ, native missed 47 consecutive games from mid-November through mid-March after suffering a hip injury in the Checkers’ Nov. 19 game against Adirondack. Despite missing more than half of the regular season, Sanguinetti (6’3”, 190 lbs.) finished fourth among Checkers’ defensemen in scoring with 15 points, with six of those points coming on the power play. He scored one goal, earned five assists (6 points) and compiled a plus-3 plus/minus rating in 12 regular-season games after returning from injury, and contributed two assists in 10 playoff games.

Originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the first round, 21st overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Sanguinetti was acquired by Carolina via trade with the Rangers on June 25, 2010. He has scored 18 goals and earned 81 assists (99 points) in 181 career AHL regular-season games with Hartford and Charlotte. Sanguinetti made his NHL debut with the Rangers on Nov. 27, 2009, and has played in five career NHL regular-season games, all with New York.

The Carolina Hurricanes will open their 2011 exhibition schedule on Sept. 19 at Buffalo.

These moves are all for Charlotte unless of injury. Brodie has no place on team once they signed Brent and Stewart. Brodie is an average at best NHL player. Brent and Stewart fill needs they needed.

  • gsmusty Jul 15, 2011

They should have resigned Troy Bodie. He woulda been a force on the ice again...that is if they would ever let him on the ice.

  • hpr641 Jul 15, 2011

"He has good hands" ... I like that, it's kind of like saying that Tyson had good hands. Seriously though, I had been thinking that the 'Canes needed a good enforcer.

You've obviously never seen how Ruutu plays if you think he doesn't hit.

  • caniacman Jul 15, 2011

This is a depth move for Charlotte, I do not think you will see him in Raleigh.

  • JPack Jul 15, 2011

Good! We need a hard hitter whose not afraid to go after someone. Ruutu and Gleason don't seem like they want to hit anymore.
