Indians take down Bulls in Wednesday matinee

Posted April 19

The Durham Bulls fell to the Indianapolis Indians 8-5 Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field, as they dropped their fourth game in their last five tries.

Tampa Bay Rays' top pitching prospect Brent Honeywell (0-1) made his Triple-A debut for Durham, suffering the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. The right-hander allowed all three runs on a pair of home runs, and retired nine straight batters at one point.

The Indians (4-9) took the lead on their first batter of the game, when Max Moroff took Honeywell deep. Durham (8-5) responded in the second frame on a two-run homer by Mike McKenry, and the 2-1 score held until the fourth frame, when Jason Rogers put the home side back in front with a two-run dinger of his own.

In the seventh the Indians extended their lead when they plated three runs behind three hits, a walk, hit-by-pitch and error for a 6-2 advantage. Durham responded in the eighth inning though, as Granden Goetzman launched his first Triple-A homer, a two-run shot, to cut the deficit to one run once more. However Indianapolis responded with two runs in the eighth frame to re-take a three-run lead, before the Bulls went in order in the ninth to close the contest.

Tyler Eppler (2-0) picked up the victory by allowing two runs in six innings, and Edgar Santana earned his second save of the campaign by recording four outs.

Goetzman led the way for Durham with a two-hit, three-RBI afternoon, while Kean Wong went 3-4 out of the nine-spot in the lineup.

The two teams square off in the rubber match of the three-game set at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday. LHP Ryan Yarbrough (0-2, 5.56) takes the mound for the Bulls opposite RHP Clay Holmes (0-1, 11.57) for the Indians.
