Injury-riddled Hurricanes recall Ryan Murphy

Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday announced that defenseman Ryan Murphy has been recalled from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League on an emergency basis.
The team also placed center Tim Brent on injured reserve, retroactive to Feb. 14.
Thursday's roster adjustments come a day after head coach Kirk Muller announced that forward Jeff Skinner is day-to-day after suffering a concussion on Feb. 14 against Toronto.
Defensemen Tim Gleason and Joni Pitkanen are also on injured reserve, but Pitkanen did practice Wednesday and could return Thursday evening against Winnipeg, Muller said.
Murphy, 19, has skated in 46 OHL games this season and ranks first among defensemenon his team in goals (8) and points (39). He is in his fourth season of junior hockey for Kitchener and has represented Canada in the World Junior Championships. Murphy was Carolina's first-round pick in 2011.
The Hurricanes also recalled Riley Nash and Jeremy Welsh from Charlotte on Monday. Michal Jordan was previously recalled from the Checkers on Feb. 14.
Thursday's showdown with Winnipeg is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at PNC Arena. With 17 points in their first 14 contests, the Hurricanes are tied atop the Southeast Division with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
