Investigator to update UNC Board of Governors Friday

Posted June 19
Updated June 20

— The former federal prosecutor investigating the history of so-called "paper classes" and other academic irregularities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is slated to provide an update Friday to the UNC Board of Governors.

Ken Wainstein's probe is the most recent in a series of university-sponsored looks at whether classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies delivered the promised education to enrolled students or catered to ill-prepared student-athletes.

A 2012 investigation led by former Gov. Jim Martin found problems in that department dating back to the mid-90s. The investigation revealed hundreds of bogus classes, altered and forged grades but concluded that the discrepancies did not only and directly benefit student-athletes. Non-athletes also took the classes.

Julius Nyang’oro, the former chairman of the Af-Am department, faces a criminal fraud charge. Prosecutors allege he took payment for classes that he never taught.

Earlier this year, academic adviser Mary Willingham told CNN that her work over the course of eight years demonstrated that 60 percent of the 183 athletes she studied read at a level more common in elementary school and up to 10 percent had the reading skills of a third-grader. UNC has disputed her findings and her research methods.

Investigations into academic misconduct at North Carolina began in 2009 after allegations of improper benefits within the football program. The NCAA sanctioned the football program for both improper benefits and academic misconduct involving a tutor, leading to a postseason ban and the loss of 16 scholarships.

Friday's meeting, at 9 a.m. in the board room at the Spangler Center, is open to the public.

Honestly, a review done with no constraints, no scope, and no cherry-picked data. When I was at UNC, I knew there were easy classes that were to help athletes and other students bump up their GPA (Port 035, PE41, DRAM 035 and numerous others). Every school has them. But in light of McCants confession, there were classes apparently set up to boost grades without even showing up. If he's telling the truth, then not only do we need action to remove those fraudulent activities but also we need a corresponding punishment. If I robbed a bank, just putting in safeguards to keep me from doing it again isn't justice.

Now if McCants is lying, then the university should take legal action based on the damage (financial and academic) he is doing to 'the brand'. Based on the lack of a cease and desist, or a gag order, his claims must have some merit.

So, as a grad, you feel this is just a PR move. What would it take for you, as a grad, to be satisfied?

    Thanks in advance.

If only the UNC academic problems could explain NCSU's 30 years of athletic irrelevance and ineptitude. Rage on Wolpfackers!

Actually this is a lie perpetrated by Dan Kane and disproven completely recently. WRAL fails yet again.

Because the clown in that interview was McCants. When Julius Hodge comes out against him you know there's truth to him being known for lying and crazy antics. I know this may be hard for you. But in this country we don't just take people at their word we require this thing called hard evidence to make major decisions. Something he has none of. At this point it is he said she said and you cant condemn someone over hearsay in this country THANKFULLY or we would be North Korea

Actually, I'm a UNC graduate. I can see where a 'fan' wouldn't understand why someone who did the work would be upset at the erosion of the integrity of the institution. It upsets me that the scope is being shielded by attorney/client privilege, that the university has the ability to determine what information the investigator is allowed to see, and that information is being disseminated while the investigation is going on. There have been information leaks in the past, so having this update could allow for more information to be hidden to protect 'the brand'.

I completed actual work and earned my diploma. Apparently, there are others who did no work and still got their diploma. It's not a NC State, Duke, other thing. It's an integrity thing. Anyone who's paid taxes in the state of North Carolina has paid for this fraud to be carried out and should be mad.

What, exactly, would a graduate do with a degree in African-American studies?

Play in the NBA of course!

Regardless of what kind of circus Tom Ross is putting on, there is more than enough evidence to rule McCants ineligible from the Spring 2005. More than enough. Emmert/Ross/Folt/Bubba/Roy & "Whitewash" Wainstein can sing, dance, and squirm all they want, McCants was ineligible in 2005. How this conclusion has escaped these clowns after the interview two weeks ago is astounding.

UNC Cheats, they just do. And they are good at it, too.
