Jared Staal to join older brothers with Hurricanes

Posted April 24, 2013

Extended interview: Jared Staal

Three Staals will take the ice for the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday against the New York Rangers, as the team announced Thursday that right winger Jared Staal has been recalled from the Charlotte Checkers.

Staal's NHL debut against the Rangers will also mark only the fourth time a trio of brothers has played in a game for an NHL team, the Hurricanes said.

Jared Staal, 22, has played in 52 games for the Checkers this season, scoring four goals and handing out three assists. He is in his fifth professional season.

The Hurricanes acquired Staal from Phoenix in 2010 in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft.

Thanks jgunn, unlike the benchwarmer above, at least some of us fans have kept the faith and have continued to pull for and comment positively on our team. Seems like someone must be having personal issues and is just on here to take them out on everyone else and not deal with them on their own.

Kirk still hasn't had a complete season to work with these guys. including a full off-season for camps and such. I'm still excited for this team, and I can't wait for October to get here again:)

You must have not been there Tuesday, if fact I know you couldn't have been there to make such a stupid comment.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention enough to know that the Canes will set a new franchise record for average attendance in a season this year. The team is averaging 17,577 fans/game

Great points and analysis, Cragsdale. I still wish Marc wasn't injured - wouldn't it be the first time in NHL history that four brothers were on the ice for the same games? Don't hate the Rangers, but I'd love to see the Canes beat them.

Wallace and Nash were sent back to Charlotte and will do more good for the Checkers now in their playoff run. No point in having them in Raleigh anymore when they can be playing in the playoffs. Checkers won't miss Jared too much

...yawn...no matter what kind of loser spin you try to put on it...This team stinks...Oh wait...all of the Canes fans who mouthed off after the srike ended dont have much to say now do they? Thats what I thought.

Because he brings more intangibles to the game at age 22 than just scoring. he's a big guy, he hits, defends well, has a great presence on the ice on his line. he's a 3rd or 4th liner whose job isn't to score but to bring energy to the team with big hitting and grinding down the opponents. He is also still considered a developmental player meaning he will go up and down all the time, and perhaps he's being called up in the last game of the season just to see how he would do against a bubble team in a high pressure situation where in it doesn't matter for the canes in anything except momentum and a win for next year, but in a situation where they could play spoiler to the rangers and maybe just hand them a loss putting the NY team in a struggling mental state. One could speculate on this for hours on why.

"only 7 points in 53 games?
Why is he being called up? "

its the end of the season and they are out of the playoffs..they are doing it as a courtesy to Eric, Jordan, and the Staal family...actually a nice gesture.
