Jerry Mack named new NCCU head football coach

Posted December 19, 2013

Jerry Mack was named the new head football coach at North Carolina Central University Thursday.

— Jerry Mack was named the new head football coach at North Carolina Central University Thursday replacing Henry Frazier III, who was fired before the 2013 season began, and interim coach Dwayne Foster.

Mack, who was most recently the wide receivers coach at South Alabama, becomes the 22nd head football coach at the school and inherits a program that went 5-7 (3-5 MEAC) last season. At an introductory press conference Thursday, Mack said fans can expect a fast-paced offense.

“Fans, be ready, because it’s going down at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium,” Mack said. "I want to win and I want to win quick."

Mack said he expects to run a spread, one-back offense but will assess the talent he has.

Durham becomes the seventh stop in the coaching career of the 33-year-old Mack who has also had stints at Memphis, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Central Arkansas, Jackson State and Delta State. Mack, becomes the third-youngest active Division I head football coach. Only Paul Nichols of Davidson and P.J. Fleck of Western Michigan are younger than Mack

Mack’s appointment is a five-year term beginning Jan. 6, with an annual salary of $180,000.

The Eagles went just 13-21 over the past three seasons under the combination of Frazier and Foster and are just 16-29 since rejoining the MEAC in 2010. NCCU rostered 18 seniors in 2013 including seven wide receivers and quarterback Jordan Reid.

I'm sure Muttsniff was among the first to congratulate and explain how the community is best served by continuing to schedule a game in Jersey South Stadium yearly. And hey, it can't hurt the city of political corruption and crime, uh, I mean, the city of medicine.

So many jokes on so many levels with this one. Yay crack!
