Kirk Muller to join St. Louis staff as assistant coach

Posted May 13, 2014

Former Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller has been named an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues, General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Tuesday.

Muller, 48, was relieved of his duties in Raleigh on May 5 after the Hurricanes finished the 2013-14 regular season 36-35-11.  He was 80-80-27 in three years with Carolina, which was his first stint as an NHL head coach.

Armstrong said in a release on St. Louis' website that the team is excited to add Muller to its staff.

"He was a Stanley Cup-winning player, and, as a coach, has shown excellent communication skills and the ability to relate to both young and veteran players."

The Blues announced an extension of head coach Ken Hitchock's contract last week. He will be with the team through at least 2014-15.

Coaching at the pro level really isn't a bad gig. If one gets fired, they usually land somewhere else with a pretty good deal. Rarely do they not end up with something pretty decent.

Glad for muller. This is a good spot for him. He should gain good experience from this and maybe return to the HC position somewhere else with better success.

That is what I was thinking.

Have we got any good prospects in the wind?

Love to see it be Dan Bylsma. He's getting a lot of heat in Pittsburgh.

A Dan Bylsma return would be kind of ironic - he played here in Raleigh for the Richmond Renegades when the IceCaps played in Dorton Arena!

I didn't know that. Thanks for the trivia tidbit. I really think it would be a great move to bring him here ... if Penguins let him go.
