LaRose agrees to AHL deal with Checkers

Posted July 29, 2014

Chad LaRose (59) and Dennis Seidenberg (44) both reach for the puck during the Bruins vs. Hurricanes game on January 28, 2013 in Raleigh, NC.

— Chad LaRose took his next step toward a return to the NHL Tuesday as he agreed to an AHL contract with the Charlotte Checkers.

The deal is strictly an AHL deal and has no ties to the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. The exact details of the contract were not immediately known.

Larose, 32, played eight seasons in the NHL, all with the Hurricanes, before sitting out last season. In 508 career games, he has recorded 180 points and 286 penalty minutes. He was also part of the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning team.

Did the Canes shoot themselves in the foot just giving LaRose a one year deal in the AHL? Chad will surely set a very good example for the AHLers with his 110 per cent hustle each and every game. Hope Francis doesn't come to regret this move as I think Chad would fit in real well with the new Canes coaching staff philosophy.

All that is required to move LaRose up to Raleigh is a contract, and somehow I would imagine that there is a contract sitting in a folder ready to go. A lot of people consider Chad "washed up", but having seen his 'hustle out there' attitude, I am with some others that feel like there is a place for him on the Hurricanes. I think that his getting the AHL contract is a sign of that. I would say that we see him in Raleigh no later than the end of November.
