Long-time Canes motivator dies

Posted April 4, 2013

Doris Barksdale, who worked with the Carolina Hurricanes for almost 20 years motivating players and staff and creating connections with the community, died Wednesday at the age of 77.

Barksdale joined the team as a motivational consultant in 1994, and made the move to North Carolina when the Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes.

She counseled players and staff on issues of professional and personal growth.

Barksdale was a liaison between the team, its Kids ‘N Community Foundation and area organizations and the founder of the “Pick Up a Book and Read” program, which gives third, fourth and fifth grade students incentives to read. Barksdale also served on the Kids ‘N Community Foundation’s Board of Directors since 2002.

“This is an extremely tough day for our team, and for me personally,” said President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. “Doris was a very special and inspirational figure in our organization, someone whose eternal optimism and positive way of thinking helped so many people with the Hurricanes and throughout the Triangle community. She was a very dear friend and mentor to many of our employees, including me, and her presence and influence will be greatly missed.”

Barksdale is survived by two sons, Andre and Robert. Robert Douglas works as Director of Production for PNC Arena.

Looks like even Doris couldn't take the losing any longer.

I've always been impressed with how much the Canes give back to the community. I'm sure Ms. Barksdale will be missed, but she leaves behind a terrific legacy.
