Saint Augustine’s University gave a very respectable showing in an 83-74 loss to Division I Winthrop University in a women’s non-conference basketball game at the Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.

Three freshmen in particular were outstanding for the Lady Falcons (4-4 overall) in the loss, which snapped a three-game winning streak. Guard Regime McCombs (Fr./Greenville, S.C.) scored a career-high 23 points off the bench including 7 of 10 three-point attempts. She scored 17 second-half points on 5 of 6 three-point shooting as the Lady Falcons attempted to keep pace with the Eagles in the final 20 minutes.

Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, Va.) finished with 16 points including 10 in the first half when the Lady Falcons led by five and eventually trailed by one (38-37) at halftime. Forward Terri Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) achieved her second double-double in as many nights, recording 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds as a reserve.

The Lady Falcons outplayed the Eagles (4-4) in several categories including points in the paint (32-26), points off turnovers (27-14), second chance points (21-14) and bench points (42-10). The Eagles outshot the Lady Falcons, however, in the second half (40 percent to 35 percent). The Lady Falcons were also outrebounded (28-18) and made less free throw attempts (6-for-6 to 11-for-13 for Winthrop) in the second stanza.

While the Lady Falcons inflicted most of their damage from the bench, the Eagles relied on their starters. Dequesha McClanahan paced Winthrop with 21 points and 10 assists. Diana Choibekova added 17 points and 11 rebounds while Samiya Wright scored 16 points. Schaquilla Nunn had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Taylor Calvert came off the bench to score 10 points for the Eagles, who outscored the Lady Falcons 45-37 in the second half.

Temperance Jacobs (Sr./McDonough, Ga.) added eight points and five rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who visit Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012. Game time is 5 p.m. It will be the fifth of an eight-game road stretch for the Lady Falcons.
