Hilton Head, S.C. — Greame McDowell defeated Raleigh native Webb Simpson with a par on the first playoff hole at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C. Sunday.
After missing the green with his approach on the first playoff hole, Simpson elected to putt through the first cut and saw his ball roll past the hole. McDowell routinely two putted his par after leaving his approach within 10 feet and put the pressure on Simpson. Simpson's comebck putt did not fall, paving the way for McDowell's win.
McDowell missed a short putt on the 18th hole of the final round to bogey, dropping him back to minus-9 and into a tie with Simpson. Simpson, playing in the final group of the day, landed his second shot on No. 18 in the heart of the green and routinely two-putted for a par to force the playoff.
Simpson entered the day tied for second behind Charlie Hoffman. Simpson stayed pat on the day shooting even par with three birdies and three bogeys on his card. Hoffman, meanwhile, shot a 5-over-par and fell back in the pack.
McDowell had three birdies on his round before his bogey on No. 18.
