MGOLF: Duke in 14th at Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate

Awendaw, S.C. — Sophomore Motin Yeung posted an even-par 72 Sunday to lead Duke to a 10-over 298 in the opening round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. The Blue Devils are 14th overall after 18 holes of play at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
Missouri and No. 24 South Carolina share the first round lead after firing seven-under 281s. College of Charleston and Wake Forest are both one shot back with No. 10 Virginia and Kentucky tied for fifth at five-under. There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard as Derek Bard (Virginia), Ben Dietrich (South Carolina) and Josh Lorenzetti each recorded four-under 68s Sunday. Six players are tied for fourth and one shot behind the leaders. The Bulls Bay Golf Club yielded 24 under-par rounds during the first round of play.
Yeung is tied for 25th after registering his fourth even-par round of the season. The Beijing, China, native got off to a terrific start with birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to move to three-under on the round. He added a birdie on the par 5 10th hole to get to -4 before running into trouble over the final eight holes. Yeung suffered bogeys on No. 11 and No. 13 before slipping back to even with a bogey-par-bogey finish to the day. Yeung had now shot even-par or better in 10 of his 19 rounds this season.
Junior Turner Southey-Gordon shot a two-over 74 in the first round. He opened with five straight pars before carding a birdie on the par 5 sixth hole. He fell back to even-par with a bogey on No. 7 before closing the front nine with back-to-back pars. Southey-Gordon collected seven pars on the back nine but also had a pair of bogeys (No. 11 and No. 17). He enters the second round of play tied for 48th.
Alexander Matlari, a freshman from Germany, is tied for 52nd after shooting a three-over 75. He carded two birdies and 11 pars on the day but also had five bogeys. Matlari was even-par after 10 holes before suffering a bogey on No. 11 and back-to-back bogeys to end the day.
Senior Austin Cody and freshman Max Greyserman shot rounds of 77 and 78 respectively. Cody had three birdies in his round but had his round derailed by six bogeys and a double-bogey. Greyserman had a pair of bad stretches to push his score up on the day. He had four straight bogeys on the front nine before battling back to two-over with birdies on No. 10 and No. 13. Greyserman was unable to maintain the pace, finishing bogey, double-bogey, bogey.
Duke opens second round play Monday at 9:50 am on the back nine at Bulls Bay Golf Club. The Blue Devils will be paired with Akron and GRU Augusta in the second round. Live scoring for the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate is available at www.golfstat.com.
