MLB Game Summary - Pittsburgh at NY Yankees|
(Saturday, May 17th)
Final Score: NY Yankees 7, Pittsburgh 1
Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann accounted for
two of five New York home runs as the Yankees slugged their way to a 7-1 win
over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Teixeira set the tone with a two-run shot in the first inning, with Zoilo
Almonte, Brett Gardner and Alfonso Soriano tacking on solo homers prior to
McCann's two-run blast in the eighth.
"We won with the home run today, which we're capable of doing," said Teixeira.
"The last two games our pitching's really picked us up. It's good to see us
break out today."
Four of the homers came against Edinson Volquez (1-4), who allowed just two
other hits over his 6 1/3-inning stint but was responsible for five runs.
Offensively, the Pirates left eight men on base and went 1-for-9 with runners
in scoring position to drop the delayed opener of this three-game set.
Friday's scheduled matchup was postponed due to rain, with the clubs to play a
traditional doubleheader Sunday.
"We have had pitches to hit and we've just to keep battling," said Pirates
manager Clint Hurdle.
David Phelps (1-0) worked around five hits and three walks to hold Pittsburgh
scoreless over the first five innings and continue New York's strong pitching
The Yankees entered Saturday's clash off back-to-back shutout wins over the
New York's power display began early, as Teixeira followed a Derek Jeter
single with a line drive that just eluded a leaping Jose Tabata and cleared
the right-field fence in the bottom of the first inning.
Almonte made it a 3-0 advantage two innings later, hammering the first pitch
he saw from Volquez deep into the bleachers in right center to lead off the
Yankees' half of the third.
Phelps got the lead to hold up by escaping a few jams and getting some
defensive assistance from Soriano, who gunned down Gaby Sanchez at the plate
as the Pittsburgh designated hitter attempted to score from second on Jordy
Mercer's base hit in the fourth.
Earlier in the inning, Starling Marte was thrown out by McCann attempting to
steal second in front of Sanchez's double.
"It was a really weird game," Phelps remarked. "I threw 100 pitches in five
innings and didn't give up any runs, but their starter's out there and he's
filling up the strike zone. It's one of those things where I was fortunate
today and got kind of lucky."
Marte finally got the Pirates on the board by greeting Dellin Betances with a
leadoff homer in the sixth, but New York countered in the bottom of the frame
on Gardner's third home run of the season.
Soriano increased the lead to 5-1 by belting a Volquez fastball into the home
bullpen to open the bottom of the seventh. McCann's laser to right off Vin
Mazzaro in the eighth capped the scoring and plated Gardner, who had drawn a
walk against the Pirates' reliever.
Teixeira's homer was the 350th of his career and eighth in the last 17 games
... Almonte was inserted into the lineup when the Yankees scratched center
fielder Jacoby Ellsbury due to illness ... Marte had not started Pittsburgh's
previous four games because of a stiff back ... The Pirates fell to 2-8 all-
time against New York in interleague play and 0-7 as the visitor ...
Pittsburgh, which had eight hits to the Yankees' nine, is now 1-17 on the
season when recording fewer hits than the opposition.
