Freese powers Angels past Tigers

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Freese's go-ahead homer in the eighth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a four-game set on Sunday.

Kole Calhoun supplied two hits and Erick Aybar scored for the Angels, who won the final three games of the series and improved to a season-best 22 games over .500.

Joe Smith (4-0) tossed a perfect eighth to earn the win. Starter Hector Santiago gave up a run on three hits with three strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings in the no-decision.

The Angels bullpen didn't allow a single Detroit baserunner and fanned four batters over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Victor Martinez supplied an RBI double for the Tigers, who mustered just three hits and have dropped four of their last six.

Reliever Joba Chamberlain (1-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up Freese's homer, while starter Rick Porcello pitched seven solid innings allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts.

"Other than the first inning we really didn't do much. We're in kind of a slump right now," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "We're not swinging the bat well."

Freese smacked a solo shot just over the wall in left-center field off Chamberlain with one out in the bottom of the eighth, breaking the tie and giving the Angels a 2-1 advantage.

"It felt good. I put a good swing on it. I never faced Joba before and he left one up," said Freese.

Huston Street tossed a flawless ninth to preserve the win and earn his second save in as many days.

Detroit opened the scoring in the first. Ian Kinsler hit a one-out single and came home two batters later on Martinez's double to right.

The Angels tied the game in the fifth. Aybar singled and Howie Kendrick bunted his way aboard to place men on first and second. Porcello was off the mark on his pickoff attempt towards second as his throw sailed into center field, allowing both runners to move up a base. Aybar rounded third and slid into home after center fielder Austin Jackson casually threw the ball to second.
