American League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, August 14th (All times Eastern)

Chicago White Sox (46-73) at Minnesota Twins (53-65), 8:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Andre Rienzo (0-0, 4.42) Minnesota - Mike Pelfrey (4-10, 5.32)

(Sports Network) - Brazilian-born right-hander Andre Rienzo makes the fourth start of his career - and the second straight against Minnesota - when the Chicago White Sox head to Target Field to begin a four-game series with the Twins.

The 25-year-old was signed by the organization in 2006 and climbed his way through the minors, making stops in the Appalachian, South Atlantic, Carolina and Southern Leagues before spending the beginning of 2013 at Triple-A Charlotte.

He was 8-6 in 20 starts with a 4.06 earned run average this year before debuting with the big club with a seven-inning stint at Cleveland on July 30. He followed it up with six innings against Detroit on Aug. 4, emerging with no-decisions in two Chicago losses.

Rienzo pitched at home for the first time against the Twins on Aug. 10 and picked up a third straight no-decision after allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of a game the White Sox ultimately won, 5-4.

In 18 1/3 overall innings as a major leaguer, he's allowed nine runs on 17 hits, walked 11 batters and struck out 14.

He's opposed by righty Mike Pelfrey, who continues to struggle in his initial season with Minnesota.

Pelfrey won 50 games in 153 appearances with the New York Mets through the end of 2012, then signed a free agent deal with the Twins in the offseason.

He was 4-6 after a 6-0 defeat of Toronto on July 6, but has dropped four consecutive decisions across six starts since, though his earned run average has actually dropped slightly from 5.63 to 5.32.

Pelfrey, who's 0-2 in three career starts against the White Sox, dropped the Aug. 10 against Rienzo in Chicago after allowing five runs in five innings.

On Wednesday in Chicago, Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Omar Infante had two hits and drove in a run as the Detroit Tigers edged the White Sox, 6-4, to avoid a three-game sweep at U.S. Cellular Field.

Gordon Beckham went 3-for-4, while Avisail Garcia and Jeff Keppinger added two hits and an RBI each for the White Sox, who went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 15 men on base.

John Danks (2-10) was pegged with the loss after giving up six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings. Danks lost his fifth straight decision and hasn't won since July 2 against Baltimore.

In Minnesota, Michael Brantley's sacrifice fly in the 12th inning lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 9-8 win over the Twins.

The Indians rallied for four runs in the eighth to tie the game. With two on and no outs, Brantley singled to score Jason Kipnis. Jason Giambi followed with a three-run homer to right to tie the game. Carlos Santana then slugged a leadoff homer in the 10th, but Joe Mauer hammered a solo shot in the home half to tie the game.

With runners on the corners and one out in the 12th, Brantley smoked a a line drive to deep center field. Clete Thomas fielded the ball cleanly and fired it to the plate, but the throw was off target and Nick Swisher scored easily.

Mauer was 5-for-7 with four RBI and Chris Collabello had two hits and an RBI for the Twins, who went 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but stranded 12 runners on base.

Ryan Pressly (3-3) was pegged with the loss after giving up the game-winning run.

The Twins won nine of the first 12 games with the White Sox in 2013, including three of four in a series from Aug. 9-11 in Chicago.
