MLB Game Summary - Baltimore at Washington

(Monday, July 7)

Final Score: Baltimore 8, Washington 2 (11 innings)

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Manny Machado capped Baltimore's three- homer 11th inning with his career-high fifth hit of the night, a two-run blast, as the Orioles beat the Washington Nationals, 8-2, in the opener of four straight games between the Beltway rivals.

Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy hit consecutive home runs in the 11th for the Orioles, who won for the seventh time in eight contests and moved a season- high nine games over .500 (49-40). Nelson Cruz belted a two-run homer and Nick Markakis added three hits, including an RBI double in the six-hit, 11th-inning outburst.

Machado, who went 5-for-6 with two runs scored during his third contest back from a five-game suspension, is 9-for-17 since returning to the lineup.

Anthony Rendon smacked a two-run homer for the Nationals, who entered Monday with seven wins in their last eight games.

Cruz legged out an infield hit to start the 11th. Davis, who had been hitless in his previous 12 at-bats and was in a 2-for-45 slump coming into the at-bat, took a 3-2 offering from Craig Stammen (0-4) over the wall in right field.

"Nobody likes to struggle, but at the same time I try to keep a positive mind frame," Davis said. "If you sit there and dwell on how bad you're scuffling it's going to be lot harder to get out of it."

Stammen said he was surprised Davis took him deep on a slider.

"I really did not think he would be able to hit that pitch out," Stammen said. "He was right on it and looking for it. It was a little bit higher than I wanted it, but he made a good swing on it."

Hardy then homered to left. Nick Hundley singled, and two outs later Markakis doubled to right-center. Aaron Barrett then surrendered Machado's eighth homer of the year, a shot to left.

T.J. McFarland (2-2) pitched two innings to get the win.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman fanned six and gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings, while Washington's Stephen Strasburg fanned nine over the first seven frames while surrendering four hits and a pair of runs.

Machado singled leading off the fourth inning, and two batters later Cruz belted his major league-leading 28th homer of the year to right field on a 1-0 pitch.

Denard Span singled to center to start the home sixth, and Rendon followed with a blast to right-center. Rendon, who is among the final NL candidates to gain entry into the All-Star Game via fan vote, belted his 13th homer of the year.

The Nationals put together a threat in the ninth against Darren O'Day. Ryan Zimmerman doubled and Bryce Harper was intentionally walked with one out. O'Day, though, fanned three in the inning, including Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos to finish the frame.

Baltimore got two-out singles from Markakis and Machado in the 10th, but Drew Storen got Adam Jones to pop-up in foul territory on the right side to end the inning.

Jones finished 0-for-6 and had a 10-game hitting streak broken.

Game Notes

Before the game, the Orioles selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Julio DePaula from Double-A Bowie and optioned righty Kevin Gausman to Triple- A Norfolk ... Rendon's last three home runs have all tied the game in the sixth inning or later ... The Nationals have not won a season series from the Orioles since 2007 (4-2) ... Washington is 0-5 at home this season in extra- inning games ... Steve Pearce, who was named co-Player of the Week for the American League, didn't start Monday because the Orioles couldn't use a designated hitter for the interleague contest. Pearce flied out in a pinch- hitting role in the 10th ... Washington right fielder Jayson Werth, who was named National League Player of the Week Monday, went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts ... Ramos extended his hitting streak to 11 games ... The Nationals have played errorless ball in 12 straight games dating to June 25. It's the longest such streak recorded by any team in MLB this season. The 12-game run of is the second-longest recorded by the Nationals since they arrived in the nation's capital in 2005, just shy of a record 13-game streak from June 2-15, 2011.
