National League Game Summary - Washington at Pittsburgh

(Saturday, May 24th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 3, Washington 2

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Harrison's RBI single to center in the seventh inning proved to be the difference, as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to take a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals in the third installment of a four-game set from PNC Park.

The Pirates trailed 2-1 through six but pushed a pair of runs across in the home half of the seventh against Stephen Strasburg (3-4) and got three perfect innings of relief to back Gerrit Cole, who allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Russell Martin singled to start and decisive frame and Starling Marte doubled two batters later to put runners on second and third for pinch-hitter Jose Tabata, who tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Travis Snider was walked intentionally, but Harrison made Washington pay for the decision by delivering the eventual game-winner.

Jared Hughes (3-1) earned the win after tossing the seventh, Jeanmar Gomez needed just five pitches to get through and eighth and Mark Melancon nailed down his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

"I just like the fact that we were down we tied it up, we're down again we come back and we battle," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of his team's resiliency.

Strasburg struck out seven in seven innings but surrendered all three runs on seven hits.

"We just have to maybe take a step back and maybe just let the game come to us and not try to do too much," Strasburg said of his team's recent struggles.

The Pirates have won the first three games in this set and four straight overall. They will send winless Francisco Liriano to the hill in Sunday's finale looking for the sweep. Doug Fister toes the slab for Washington, losers in four in a row.

Both teams put a run across in the fourth inning on solo home runs. Ian Desmond's blast to left-center off Cole gave the Nats a brief lead, but Neil Walker tied it at 1-1 with his homer in the home half.

Wilson Ramos made it 2-1 in favor of the visitors in the top of the fifth, plating Anthony Rendon with a single to right. The margin held until the Pirates broke through with two in the seventh.

Game Notes

Washington hit 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base, while Pittsburgh finished 1-for-3 with six left on ... Greg Dobbs had two of Washington's five hits ... Martin and Marte each had two hits for the Pirates.
