American League Preview from The Sports Network

Monday, April 29th (All times eastern)

Minnesota Twins (11-10) at Detroit Tigers (13-10), 7:08 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Mike Pelfrey (2-2, 7.94) Detroit - Max Scherzer (2-0, 4.13)

(Sports Network) - Righty Max Scherzer can make it five 2013 starts without a loss on Monday night when his Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

Scherzer, who won a career-high 16 games last season, opened 2013 with an 8-4 defeat of the New York Yankees on April 6.

He got consecutive no-decisions at Oakland and Seattle in his next two starts, then returned home for a 7-5 win over Kansas City on April 24.

The momentum is symptomatic of the St. Louis native's entire career, in which he's gone 12 games over .500 at home (31-19) while winning and losing at the same rate (23-23) on the road.

Scherzer is 3-2 in nine career starts against the Twins.

Minnesota counters with 6-foot-7 righty Mike Pelfrey, who's alternated wins and losses in his initial four starts with his new team.

Pelfrey, who pitched just three times in 2012 with the New York Mets due to injury, was acquired in the offseason when he signed a one-year deal worth $4 million.

He allowed two unearned runs in defeating Detroit in his initial outing with the Twins on April 4, and has since lost to Kansas City, beaten the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and lost to Miami.

The April 4 start was the second of his career against the Tigers and leveled his record against Detroit to 1-1.

On Sunday in Minnesota, Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer and Kevin Correia spun eight scoreless frames as the Twins earned a four-game series split with a 5-0 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Correia (3-1) paved the way for Minnesota's first shutout of the season, forcing 13 ground ball outs and allowing just six hits and one walk.

Brian Dozier and Jamey Carroll added two hits and an RBI apiece, while Chris Parmelee contributed a sacrifice fly to the Twins' second straight win.

In Detroit, Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson each hit three-run homers as the Tigers defeated the Atlanta Braves, 8-3, to complete a three-game sweep.

Omar Infante hit a solo homer and scored twice for the Tigers, who have won four of five. Victor Martinez knocked in a run.

Detroit starter Doug Fister (4-0), making his 100th career start, allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings. The right-hander had eight strikeouts.

Minnesota won two of three from the Tigers in an early April series, though Detroit won the 2012 season series, 10-8.
