National League Game Summary - Colorado at Miami

(Monday, March 31st)

Final Score: Miami 10, Colorado 1

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning National League Rookie of the Year Jose Fernandez was strong in his season debut as the Miami Marlins routed the Colorado Rockies, 10-1, on Opening Day for both clubs.

Fernandez (1-0) surrendered only one run off five hits with no walks across six solid innings. His nine strikeouts tied the franchise's Opening Day record that was set by Josh Beckett in 2004.

"I didn't know how I was going to react to opening day," Fernandez said. "But it came out great."

Casey McGehee's two doubles brought home four runners, while Marcell Ozuna stroked a solo home run scored three times in the win. Adeiny Hechavarria and Ozuna both went 3-for-4 for the Marlins, who are 5-1 in their last six season openers at home.

Carlos Gonzalez's homer accounted for Colorado's lone run. Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) gave up five runs on four hits while fanning six batters across 4 1/3 innings of work in his first career Opening Day start.

"When a guy like that is pitching, you expect that kind of game," Gonzalez said of Fernandez.

After Ozuna opened the scoring with a solo shot to left in the third, the Marlins tacked on five runs in the fifth.

Ozuna led off the inning with a line drive double to left. Hechavarria's single bounced off the mound and up the middle to bring Ozuna home. Fernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hechavarria over to second. Christian Yelich's single put runners on the corners and De La Rosa hit Jeff Baker with a pitch to load the bases.

Wilton Lopez came in to replace De La Rosa with the bases loaded and one out. His first batter, Stanton, hit a short infield single that brought Hechavarria home. McGehee's line drive double to left emptied the bases to make it a 6-0 ball game.

The Rockies' lone run came in the sixth when Gonzalez smacked Fernandez's fastball to center for a solo home.

The Marlins added another run in the sixth to make it 7-1. Ozuna, Hechavarria, and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs all singled to load the bases with no outs. After Yelich struck out and Baker lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Ozuna.

Yelich, Stanton, and McGehee all supplied RBI doubles in the eighth off Chad Bettis to make it a 10-1 game. Brad Hand pitched the final two innings for the Marlins, giving up one hit while retiring the Rockies in order in the ninth to end the game.

Game Notes

The Marlins and Rockies have both have 11-11 records all-time on Opening Day ... This was the first time that the two 1993 expansion teams met in a season-opening series ... Fernandez is the youngest Opening Day starter in team history ... Rockies Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki tied Larry Walker for the 2nd-most Opening Day starts in Rockies history with eight. Both players trail Todd Helton, who started 16 straight at first base.
