National League Preview from The Sports Network

Tuesday, April 23rd (All times eastern)

Arizona Diamondbacks (10-9) at San Francisco Giants (13-7), 10:15 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.42) San Francisco - Matt Cain (0-2, 7.15)

(Sports Network) - Matt Cain will try to right himself on the hill Tuesday as the San Francisco Giants aim to continue their dominance against National League West foes when they resume a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Giants improved to 9-1 against the rest of the NL West by rallying to take a 5-4 win in the series opener on Monday.

Buster Posey deadlocked that one with a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Brandon Belt hit a pinch-hit, RBI single in the ninth to lift San Francisco.

Posey also had a run-scoring double for the Giants, who have won seven straight at home and four consecutive overall.

Sergio Romo (1-1) retired the final batter in the top of the ninth to earn the win behind Ryan Vogelsong, who was on the hook for the loss before Posey took David Hernandez deep in the eighth.

Vogelsong was charged with four runs on seven hits over seven innings and served up a solo homer to his counterpart, Wade Miley.

"There's no quit in this team, I can tell you that," said Vogelsong. "We fight to the last out. It's fun to watch."

Miley was in line for the win after allowing two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 frames, but the bullpen's failure resulted in the Arizona's sixth loss in nine games.

"They put together a good inning late," Miley said. "It just slipped away from us."

Cain, who was an impressive 16-5 in 2012, is winless this season and is coming off an outing in which he allowed seven runs -- including a pair of two-run homers -- in his first three innings against Milwaukee before settling down a bit from there. The right-hander is 3-0 with a minuscule 1.00 ERA in his last three starts against the Diamondbacks and 13-6 over 27 starts overall.

"I will say, Cain gave us a gutty effort," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He regrouped and made a nice adjustment."

The unbeaten Patrick Corbin will oppose Cain. The lefty continued his strong start to the season last Thursday against the Mets, giving up just two hits and one run while punching out seven in seven innings en route to a no decision.

Corbin is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA in four career starts versus the Giants.

San Francisco, which hasn't won eight in a row at home since a nine-game run from May 6-22, 2011, split 18 meetings with Arizona in each of the past two seasons.
