Red-hot Gomez leads Brewers into Colorado

(SportsNetwork.com) - Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez can ruffle opponents' feathers and with both his bat and mouth, and recently has been taking care of business at the plate.

Known for enraging other players at times with his antics, Gomez tries to stay hot in the batter's box Friday against the Colorado Rockies in the first of three straight games at Coors Field.

Gomez is riding a 15-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 32 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors. He struck out three times and managed a single in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a four-game set in the desert.

Gomez is one game shy of matching Prince Fielder's 2007 streak of reaching base, and two games short of the longest run by a Brewer since Scott Podsednik set a club record by turning the trick in 47 consecutive games in 2003.

"If it happens it happens, but I'm not thinking about it," Gomez said of the streak on the club's website.

Aramis Ramirez and Lyle Overbay both had two hits and an RBI against the D- backs, while Milwaukee starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo tossed seven innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and no walks for the win. Francisco Rodriguez picked up his MLB-best 23rd save and moved into sole possession of 14th place on the all-time list with 327.

Ryan Braun did not play on Thursday to rest and is one game shy of 1,000 with the Brewers, which will make him the 12th player to appear in that many games in franchise history.

"I think longevity in this game in general is an accomplishment," Braun said of the milestone. "People always say the challenging thing isn't making it to the big leagues; it's staying in the big leagues. So for anybody who accomplishes that kind of longevity, it's something to be proud of and looked back upon fondly for sure."

The Brewers, winners in eight of the last 12 games, are 15-7-2 in series play this season, including 6-1-2 over the last eight series. Milwaukee is 24-15 on the road and 8-3-1 in series play as the guest.

Milwaukee will hand the ball to Marco Estrada Friday and he has lost two straight starts to fall to 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA this season. Estrada, who has allowed 15 runs in his last three starts, was touched for five runs in five innings of a 13-4 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.

Estrada hasn't posted a win in his last three appearances -- all Milwaukee losses -- and is 2-2 in eight road assignments this season. The right-hander has no record and a 4.15 ERA in four games (2 starts) lifetime against Colorado.

The Rockies had an extra day to get over the fact that Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw shut them down for the first no-hitter of his career in Wednesday's 8-0 loss at Chavez Ravine.

Kershaw struck out a career-high 15 batters and almost had a perfect game until shortstop Hanley Ramirez committed a fielding error. Rockies left fielder Corey Dickerson reached base in the top of the seventh after Ramirez misfired on a throw to first base.

"I think that anytime there is a special moment for someone, you want to watch how the guy responds," said Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. "Clayton, obviously, I have a lot of respect for. I know how hard he works. It's nice for me to see how something means enough to bring tears to (their) eyes. It means that they care."

Dickerson was 0-for-4 and seven Rockies went 0-for-3. Colorado starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa was reached for eight runs -- seven earned -- in 3 1/3 innings.

Colorado suffered the sweep at Dodger Stadium and had won its previous five games. Now, the Rockies are 6-14 in the past 20 games.

The Rockies sit nine games off the lead in the NL West and will also welcome St. Louis to the Mile High City on this homestand.

Christian Bergman will make his third career start Friday since a callup from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He lost his debut versus Atlanta on June 9, when he allowed two runs in six innings of a 3-1 loss.

In Saturday's 5-4 win at San Francisco, the right-handed Bergman was reached for three runs in six innings of work for a no-decision.

Colorado went 4-2 against Milwaukee last season and 5-1 in 2012. The club is 63-51 all-time against Milwaukee, including 40-18 in Colorado. Tulowitzki is hitting .404 (55-for-136) with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs, 32 RBI and 30 runs in 35 career games against the Brewers.
