American League Preview from The Sports Network

Saturday, August 31st (All times Eastern)

Baltimore Orioles (71-62) at New York Yankees (71-63), 1:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Scott Feldman (11-9, 3.87) New York - Ivan Nova (7-4, 3.14)

(Sports Network) - Ivan Nova hasn't lost in more than a month. The New York Yankees hope the right-hander continues his success on Saturday in the middle contest of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Nova is 3-0 in his last five starts with his last defeat coming July 27 to Tampa Bay. He didn't get a decision after throwing 6 2/3 frames against the Rays on Sunday. He had control issues in that game with six walks, which tied a career-high.

Nova is 4-2 with a 4.95 ERA in 10 career appearances (9 starts) overall versus Baltimore.

Scott Feldman counters on the mound for the Orioles. The right-hander has won his last two decisions, allowing a total of three runs over 11 2/3 innings. Feldman is 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA in eight games (6 starts) lifetime against the Yankees.

Including Saturday's game, these teams will play each other six more times this season, all in the next two weeks. The Orioles are four games behind Oakland for the final wild card spot, while the Yankees sit a half-game further back of Baltimore.

In Friday's opener, Ichiro Suzuki and Alfonso Soriano each hit two-run homers to lift the Yankees to an 8-5 win.

Robinson Cano went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Yankees, who started a 10-game homestand. Alex Rodriguez and Mark Reynolds added an RBI apiece.

"We got behind and were able to come back a couple times," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We had a huge inning, some big home runs, some big base hits by some guys. It was a nice job."

New York starter CC Sabathia (12-11) allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. The big left-hander improved to 18-5 lifetime against Baltimore.

The Yankees remained eight games behind Boston for first place in the AL East.

Danny Valencia hit a two-run homer for the Orioles, who have lost three of their last four games. Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Nick Markakis each drove in a run.

Miguel Gonzalez (8-7) got the start for Baltimore and gave up seven runs on six hits over four-plus innings.

"Sometimes the game is going to speed up on you," Gonzalez said. "I was feeling well at the beginning and then towards the end I was just leaving balls up."

Baltimore has won seven of its 13 matchups with the Yankees this season.
