Description: Alfredo Aceves has agreed to a minor league deal with Baltimore. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Aceves spent most of last season with Boston's Triple-A team, the Pawtucket Red Sox. The righthander has a history of alienating teammates and coaches with his eccentric behavior. We'll see how well he meshes with tightly-wound Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

11/16/2013 11:07:00 AM
Description: The Mets could make a play for free agent righthander Alfredo Aceves. SOURCE: Buster Olney, ESPN
Insight: Aceves wore out his welcome in Boston but at age 31, he still has a few years left to prove himself. If the Mets do end up signing Aceves, it will be interesting to see if they employ him as a starter or out of the bullpen. Though Aceves' preference is to start, his best season came in 2011 when he was used almost exclusively as a middle reliever (10-2, 2.61 ERA in 114 innings).

7/10/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox sent righthander Alfredo Aceves down to Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday.
Insight: Aceves was called up last weekend after Andrew Miller went down with a foot injury. He should continue to hop between Pawtucket and Boston for the rest of the season.

6/17/2013 2:38:00 PM
Description: Red Sox righthander Alfredo Aceves is expected to get a start in one of the Tuesday doubleheader games.
Insight: Aceves' career numbers are better as a reliever than as a starter. He's made 14 career starts and is 5-2 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.569 WHIP while having a 3.54 ERA and 1.110 WHIP in 177 relief appearances.

4/24/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: Sean McAdams from Comcast Sports New England is reporting that the Red Sox have demoted righthander Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Insight: Aceves (1-1, 8.66 ERA) had a bizarre outing Tuesday against Oakland (he had two balks in one inning) and apparently that was the last straw for manager John Farrell, who was never high on Aceves to begin with. John Lackey is set to rejoin the rotation this weekend so Aceves had to know his days as a starter were coming to an end.

2/18/2013 5:34:00 PM
Description: Comcast Sports New England reports that Red Sox righthander Alfredo Aceves had an incident at batting practice on Sunday.
Insight: For whatever reason, Aceves (2-10, 5.36 ERA in 2012) refused to throw batting practice at full speed, instead opting to lob the ball like a slow-pitch softball pitcher. The incident drew the ire of manager John Farrell, who was seen having a long talk with Aceves after batting practice. We're not sure what will come of this bizarre incident but Aceves has a history of being a loose cannon and could be let go or traded if he continues to disrespect his teammates and coaches like he did on Sunday.

11/4/2012 3:34:00 PM
Description: The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo believes that the Red Sox could be interested in trading righthander Alfredo Aceves during the offseason.
Insight: Aceves struggled mightily as a closer last season after having success as a long reliever and occasional starter in 2011. Aceves has talent but is also prone to meltdowns and can be a bit of a handful in the clubhouse. At this point, Aceves' fantasy outlook for next season is unclear.

8/25/2012 9:09:00 PM
Description: Righthander Alfredo Aceves has been suspended three games by the Red Sox following a heated exchange with manager Bobby Valentine after Friday's win over the Royals. Aceves was upset that Valentine used Andrew Bailey instead of him in a save situation.
Insight: The drama just never stops in Boston. It would appear Aceves' days of closing games for the Red Sox are over.

6/2/2012 5:02:00 PM
Description: Boston closer Alfredo Aceves saved his 14th game of the season on Saturday against Toronto. Aceves tossed his second straight 1-2-3 inning.
Insight: Aceves hasn't allowed a hit in three outings since he gave up two runs in back-to-back appearances on May 27-28. Hopefully Aceves can continue to pitch well so that he becomes a more attractive trade chip when we get closer to Andrew Bailey's return.

5/27/2012 6:48:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves blew his third save of the season Sunday against the Rays. Aceves entered the game with Boston leading 3-2 but he coughed up the lead by giving up a two-run homer to infielder Sean Rodriguez with one out in the ninth inning.
Insight: You can't get too down on Aceves for this one tough outing. Since starting the season poorly, he's been remarkably solid at the end of the bullpen for Boston, compiling a 2.30 ERA for the month of May. Expect Aceves to do better the next time he takes the hill for the Red Sox.

5/12/2012 9:48:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves grabbed his seventh save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday.
Insight: After an inauspicious start (8 ER in 3 IP to start the season) Aceves has settled nicely into Boston's closer role. The righty has gone 5-for-5 in save opportunities with 15 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings since his five-run meltdown against the Yankees on April 21.

4/9/2012 10:47:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves was finally able to record his first save of the season. Aceves tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve Boston's 4-2 comeback victory over the Blue Jays on Monday night.
Insight: Pitching with a two-run lead, Aceves was aggressive with the three hitters he faced and it paid off. Aceves looked nothing like the pitcher who couldn't register a single out this past weekend in Detroit. Red Sox fans should sleep a lot easier tonight after this performance from Aceves.

4/8/2012 4:52:00 PM
Description: In his first save opportunity of the season, Alfredo Aceves surrendered a three-run homer to Miguel Cabrera and was immediately pulled from the game by Bobby Valentine.
Insight: Aceves should be on a very short leash now after back-to-back awful outings. The Red Sox do not appear any closer to solving their ninth inning issues. If Aceves continues to struggle, look for ex-Astros closer Mark Melancon to get some save chances.

4/5/2012 4:34:00 PM
Description: New Red Sox closer Alfredo Aceves gave up deciding hit in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Red Sox season opener at Detroit. Mark Melancon started the inning and gave up two hits before being removed for Aceves.
Insight: Not a good start for either of the Red Sox closing options. Don't worry though, as Aceves' closing job won't be put in jeopardy based on one poor outing, especially considering the tough spot he was put in by Melancon.

4/4/2012 3:08:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves will close for the Red Sox, the Boston Herald reports.
Insight: It was either going to be Aceves or Mark Melancon, and Bobby Valentine has apparently chosen Aceves. He's had success as a long reliever, spot starter and setup man, so he shouldn't have a difficult time adapting to his new role. Drop Melancon and grab Aceves if you can.

4/1/2012 4:32:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves did not earn a spot in the Red Sox's starting rotation, but he is expected to be Boston's closer if Andrew Bailey isn't ready for Opening Day.
Insight: Aceves was phenomenal as a long relief man last season (10-2, 2.61 ERA) so we didn't see this as a possibility. Mark Melancon's (2.78 ERA, 20 saves for Houston in 2011) fantasy stock should nosedive upon this announcement.

4/8/2011 9:15:00 AM
Description: The Red Sox will call up RP Alfredo Aceves to be available out of the bullpen for the Red Sox-Yankees series. SOURCE: Pete Abraham via Twitter
Insight: In deeper AL-only leagues Aceves could be worth an add but he is a risky play against the Yankees, who are hitting very well.

2/8/2011 9:02:00 PM
Description: The Boston Red Sox signed former Yankee relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves to a one-year Major League deal worth $650,000 on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.
Insight: Although he is returning from a back injury last year, Aceves could prove to be a low-cost investment for the Red Sox. He's already proven he can pitch effectively in a tough A.L. East division. (RapidDraft.com)

2/8/2011 6:45:00 PM
Description: The Red Sox have agreed to a minor league deal with Alfredo Aceves. SOURCE: NJ.COM
Insight: If Aceves is healthy this could be a great signing for Boston. He has proven to be an effective long reliever in the AL East. And, their risk is very minimal. However, there isn't much value here - it's really hard to see Aceves ever having a critical role for Boston.

12/2/2010 9:33:00 PM
Description: Alfredo Aceves was not tendered a contract by the Yankees. SOURCE: BLOOMBERG
Insight: This makes sense after he injured his clavicle on Tuesday. Once he proves he is healthy he will certainly get a spring training invite somewhere.
