National League Game Summary - Miami at St. Louis

(Saturday, July 5)

Final Score: Miami 6, St. Louis 5

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Baker struck a go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to give the Miami Marlins a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the middle test of a three-game series.

Casey McGehee added a game-tying hit in the ninth, while Christian Yelich launched a three-run homer in the seventh for the Marlins, who had dropped their previous two contests.

Mike Dunn (6-4) tossed a scoreless eighth before Steve Cishek locked it down in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 19th save.

Allen Craig hit a two-run homer and Jhonny Peralta added a solo shot for the Cardinals, whose three-game win streak came to an end. Matt Holliday drove in a run and scored twice.

Trevor Rosenthal (0-4) took the loss and the blown save, charged with two runs on two hits while retiring one batter.

Donovan Solano singled off Rosenthal with one out in the ninth, then McGehee's single into the gap in right center was flagged down by Jon Jay and the relay throw beat Solano to the plate. Yadier Molina applied the tag late, however, and McGehee took second on the throw and scored the lead run as Baker singled to left off Sam Freeman.

"You can't go up there thinking it's going to happen every night. You've got to be OK with the fact that those guys (closers), they're going to get you some times than not," said McGehee, who grounded into a double play to end Friday's 3-2 defeat.

Cishek allowed a Peralta single with one down in the home half, but Molina grounded into a game-ending double play.

The clubs exchanged runs in the first, with McGehee singling home Yelich in the top of the frame and Molina plating Holliday on a base hit in the home half.

Miami had runners on the corners with one out in the fourth after Marcell Ozuna doubled and moved up on a groundout before Jeff Mathis walked. Cards starter Shelby Miller then made a diving play on a squeeze bunt by counterpart Andrew Heaney, and flipped home to get Ozuna. A brief replay determined Molina did not block the Marlins' runner.

In the bottom portion, the Cards briefly broke the game open with four runs. Holliday drove in one with a single, Craig followed with a two-run shot to right center and Peralta hit the left-field foul pole to make it 5-1.

"We're in a big situation where we just came off a nice inning where you get a couple back-to-back home runs and got a lot of positive momentum going," Matheny said.

Yelich's three-run blast to dead center with two down in the sixth pulled the Marlins within 5-4. Ed Lucas reached on a one-out single and Miller was yanked after Mathis followed with a base hit. Seth Maness retired Reed Johnson but allowed the homer.

Game Notes

Heaney lasted just 3 2/3 frames, giving up eight hits and five runs with three walks, while Miller allowed nine hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings ... Miami's first four hitters (Yelich, Solano, Giancarlo Stanton, McGehee) combined to finish 9-for-20 with four runs scored and five RBI ... Peralta and Molina each collected two hits for St. Louis ... Craig's homer was his first since May 29 against San Francisco ... Following the contest, the Marlins made several roster moves: activating infielder Adeiny Hechavarria from the 15-day disabled list; reinstated pitcher Tom Koehler from the paternity list; optioned outfielder Jake Marisnick and pitcher Andrew Heaney to Triple-A New Orleans.
