National League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, April 13th (All times Eastern)

Chicago Cubs (4-7) at St. Louis Cardinals (6-5), 2:15 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Edwin Jackson (0-0, 6.30) St. Louis - Michael Wacha (1-0, 0.71)

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs haven't won a series since taking two-of-three in Cincinnati, Sept. 9-11 of last season.

Former Cardinals pitcher Edwin Jackson has a chance to give the Cubs two wins in three games at Busch Stadium when the teams collide Sunday in the finale of their weekend set.

Jackson, who was dealt to the Cardinals near the trade deadline in 2011, pitched in 13 games for St. Louis that year before moving on to play for the Nationals in 2012 and then joined the Cubs.

The 30-year-old right-hander has yet to record a decision in two starts this season after going 8-18 a year ago. On Tuesday, Jackson struggled by allowing nine hits and six runs over 4 2/3 innings in Chicago's a 7-6 loss to the Pirates at Wrigley Field. His first two starts have come against Pittsburgh.

Over his career, Jackson has struggled to a 2-6 mark with a 4.83 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) against the Cardinals.

Michael Wacha, a 22-year-old right-hander, counters for the Cardinals. His first two starts came against the Reds, and Wacha was sharp in both outings. The Cardinals didn't give him any run support in a 1-0 loss on April 2, but Wacha didn't get a decision after limiting the Reds to three hits over 6 2/3 innings. On Monday, he surrendered seven hits in six frames in a 5-3 victory for the Cardinals.

Wacha faced the Cubs twice during his first season in the majors and had one start with no decisions and a 3.00 ERA.

Yesterday, Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay each knocked in two runs as St. Louis earned a 10-4 win.

Matt Adams hit a solo homer for the Cardinals, who bounced back after losing in extra innings on Friday. Adam Wainwright (2-1) got the start and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out eight over seven innings.

"It was nice to get some runs for Adam and let him do his thing," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Cardinals and senior vice president and general manager John Mozeliak agreed to a two-year contract extension.

Junior Lake hit a solo homer for the Cubs, who went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded five. Carlos Villanueva (1-3) gave up nine runs on 10 hits over three-plus innings.

Lake hit the first pitch of the game over the wall in left.

But the Cardinals took control with a four-run second. Adams led off the frame with a blast to right. Yadier Molina's infield single and Allen Craig's single to right put men on first and second. Daniel Descalso, Wainwright and Carpenter followed with three straight RBI singles.

"Things unraveled quick," said Villanueva. "They're a good team and they took advantage of my mistakes."

The Cardinals were 12-7 versus the Cubs a year ago and have won six of their last seven against them.
