Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray pitched five innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits as the Rangers defeated the Athletics, 7-2, on Wednesday.
Insight: If there was ever a time when Oakland needed a big start, it was Thursday. With the victory, Texas completed a sweep of the playoff hopeful Oakland Athletics. Since Aug. 1, Gray is a bismol 1-5 with a 4.42 ERA.

9/18/2014 6:15:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray pitched a complete-game shutout against the Rangers Sunday, clinching the final wild card spot in the American League.
Insight: Gray carried the Athletics on Sunday. He gave up just six hits, struck out five and walked none in the second complete game of his career. Gray finishes 2014 at 14-10 with a 3.08 ERA. Gray should only get better in 2015.

8/23/2014 10:33:00 AM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray won his first start since July 26 Friday against the Angels. He went 8 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits.
Insight: Gray went 0-4 with a 4.94 ERA in his first four starts of August after sweeping through July with a 5-0 record and a 1.03 ERA in five starts. The right-hander is up to 171 innings this season, but wearing down shouldn't be a concern. He threw 152 innings in the minors in 2012 and 182 1/3 innings combined between the minors and majors last year.

Hot7/20/2014 7:38:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray improved to 4-0 in July Sunday against the Orioles.
Insight: Gray (11-3, 2.72 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander has a 0.95 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP this month.

Hot7/13/2014 7:00:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray has gone 3-0 with a 0.83 ERA in July.
Insight: Gray allowed one unearned run on six hits over 7 2/3 innings Sunday at Seattle to win his 10th game of the season. The right-hander has bounced back nicely from recording a 5.50 ERA over six starts from May 27 to June 28.

Cold6/28/2014 9:19:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray has recorded a 5.50 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP over his last six starts.
Insight: The A's gave him a 4-0 lead before he even stepped on the mound Saturday against the Marlins, but he gave up five runs over five innings and now has a 3.20 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this season.

6/22/2014 4:32:00 PM
Description: Sonny Gray's next start will be pushed back to Saturday. SOURCE: Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle
Insight: He was supposed to start Tuesday against the Mets. Now left-hander Scott Kazmir (9-2, 2.08 ERA) will get the start instead. The A's are trying not to overwork their talented 24-year-old.

6/18/2014 6:40:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray threw his best game since May 22 Wednesday against Texas.
Insight: Gray allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven over seven innings to win his seventh game of the year. The right-hander went 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA in his last four starts.

Hot5/27/2014 2:00:00 PM
Description: A's starter Sonny Gray has yet to give up more than three earned runs in any of his 10 starts this season.
Insight: In fact, since coming up in July of 2013 Gray has given up two earned runs or fewer in 17 of 22 outings. His season-long numbers show a 5-1 record with a 1.99 ERA and he's become the ace of the A's staff.

5/22/2014 10:22:00 PM
Description: A's starter Sonny Gray pitched well in a no-decision Thursday against the Rays.
Insight: Gray (5-1, 1.99 ERA) let up only one run in eight innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .206 against the right-hander in 2014.

Hot5/16/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray tied a career high with nine strikeouts Friday at Cleveland.
Insight: Gray gave up a first-inning solo homer to Nick Swisher but finished six innings while allowing just two hits and the lone run. Gray has thrown a quality start in all nine appearances this season and is now 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP.

Hot4/29/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: Athletics starter Sonny Gray threw his first career shutout Monday at Texas.
Insight: Gray outdueled Yu Darvish and held the Rangers to three hits. He has exceeded lofty expectations so far, going 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

4/1/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Athletics Opening Day starter Sonny Gray took a comebacker off his ankle Monday, but manager Bob Melvin said the young hurler is fine, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Gray struck out seven batters over six scoreless innings Monday against the Indians but took a no decision. He had a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 67 Ks in 64 innings as a rookie last year.

4/1/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Athletics young right-hander Sonny Gray was solid on Opening Day, though he ended up with a no-decision.
Insight: Gray went six innings, yielding five hits and no runs while striking out seven. He inherited the start when A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker went down with injuries. A lot is on the 24-year-old's shoulders, but he has the talent to be a team ace. Hopefully the A's will back him with a few runs next time out.

3/23/2014 12:55:00 PM
Description: The Athletics will go with Sonny Gray on Opening Day, according to Jane Lee of mlb.com.
Insight: The Athletics really had no other choice but to throw Gray into that spot. They lost Jarrod Parker to Tommy John surgery and will start the year with A.J. Griffin on the DL as well. Gray had a 3.42 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings at Triple-A last season and then went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 67 Ks in 64 innings. The right-hander has a plus fastball, an excellent curveball and also gets a ton of grounders. He should easily outperform his ADP this season.

10/14/2013 3:23:00 PM
Description: Further testing on Sonny Gray's injured thumb revealed a torn UCL. SOURCE: Jane Lee, MLB.com
Insight: The injury will require surgery. Gray is righthanded and the torn UCL is on his left thumb, so he won't have to worry about the injury affecting his mechanics. Gray (5-3, 2.67 ERA) had a strong rookie season and should be a nice fantasy option in 2014.

10/11/2013 11:43:00 AM
Description: A's rookie pitcher Sonny Gray suffered a broken left thumb after he was hit by Prince Fielder in the fifth inning of Thursday's game with Detroit, according to a CSNBayArea.com report.
Insight: It's his non-throwing hand, so he should be fine when spring training rolls around. Gray pitched very well down the stretch, going 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 10 regular season starts.

Hot10/9/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: The A's will give rookie Sonny Gray a chance to be the hero Thursday night against the Tigers.
Insight: He'll get the ball for the decisive Game 5 a mere five days after limiting Detroit to four hits in a Game 2 no-decision (the A's would later win on a walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth). Oakland's other option for Game 5 was Bartolo Colon, who will probably be available out of the bullpen should Gray get knocked out of the game early. The winner of Thursday's game will head to Fenway Park to play the Red Sox in the ALCS on Saturday.

10/1/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: Athletics rookie pitcher Sonny Gray will start Game 2 of the ALDS against the Tigers.
Insight: The 23-year-old went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 64 innings this season. The A's have never been averse to throwing their young pitchers into the fire. Just last year, rookies Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone and A.J. Griffin started for the team in the ALDS against Detroit. The Athletics will follow Bartolo Colon in Game 1 and Gray in Game 2 with Jarrod Parker in Game 3 and Dan Straily in Game 4.

9/1/2013 8:38:00 AM
Description: Oakland starter Sonny Gray struck out seven batters and scattered five hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to beat the Rays Saturday night.
Insight: The 23-year-old had his worst start of the month his last time out, allowing six runs over 3 1/3 innings. He's 2-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 31 K in 31 innings since joining the rotation on Aug. 10. The 2011 first-round pick should be added in all formats.
