American League Game Summary - Chicago at Detroit

(Thursday, July 11th)

Final Score: Chicago 6, Detroit 3

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Josh Phegley's first career grand slam helped end Chris Sale's seven-start winless streak and the Chicago White Sox claimed the rubber match of a three-game set with a 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.

The White Sox were trailing, 3-1, before Phegley crushed the third homer of his first week in the majors, a bases-clearing blast that put them in front for good.

Sale (6-8) served up a pair of homers among 10 hits allowed, but struck out eight and allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first win since May 17. He lost six decisions while pitching to a 3.10 ERA in between wins.

Alejandro De Aza had a solo homer among three hits and two runs scored, Alexei Ramirez had two hits and knocked in a run and Addison Reed closed the door with a perfect ninth for his 23rd save of the season.

Anibal Sanchez (7-6) surrendered the grand slam and was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and three walks over 5 1/3 frames.

Miguel Cabrera launched his 30th home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to extend Detroit's margin to 3-1, but Sanchez came undone in the sixth on one pitch after coming away unscathed in his previous four innings.

He quickly faced a bases loaded situation, and saw his final pitch sail into the left field seats on Phegley's slam, which opened up a 5-3 lead for Chicago.

Luke Putkonen came in to relieve Sanchez, but didn't stay for the long. On his third pitch, he threw near but behind the back of Ramirez, infuriating the infielder and prompting both benches to clear.

The umpires tossed Putkonen and Detroit manager Jim Leyland soon after. Leyland came out of the dugout hot because warnings were not issued in the fifth when Sale threw near the head of Prince Fielder on the at-bat following Cabrera's homer.

Sale was lifted after surrendering a double to Torii Hunter in the seventh, but Matt Lindstrom came on from the bullpen to retire Cabrera and keep Chicago's two-run edge intact.

De Aza's homer in the eighth helped secure a rare win for Chicago, only the team's fourth in 15 games, and staked them to an early lead when he scored on Ramirez's first inning double.

Detroit's Matt Tuiasosopo has homered in all three games he's played in over the last four days, and his two-run shot off Sale in the second provided the Tigers with a 2-1 edge.

Game Notes

Cabrera is the first player in MLB history with 30 home runs and 90 RBI before the All-Star break ... Ramirez left in the sixth inning shortly after the benches cleared. He laced a single into right field, but came up lame running to first and exited with a leg injury ... Sanchez fell to 5-2 in seven starts at home this season ... It was Detroit's third loss in its last 10 games ... Victor Martinez went 3-for-4 for the Tigers, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
