Wieters homers as Orioles hold off Blue Jays

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Matt Wieters homered and knocked in two runs to back a solid seven-inning outing from Miguel Gonzalez, as the Baltimore Orioles edged the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Gonzalez (11-8) limited the Jays to two hits, walked one and struck out five before exiting with a 3-1 lead.

"You like to leave a good taste in your mouth and it's a reminder to everybody of how good he's been for us, and hopefully will be again," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Gonzalez. "It seems like he's managed the groin pretty good, too. He pushed it a little bit there. He was going hitter to hitter that inning before. But he was good."

Baltimore reliever Tommy Hunter struggled in the eighth, allowing hits to three of the first four batters. Toronto trimmed its deficit on Brett Lawrie's RBI double, but wound up stranding two men in scoring position as Hunter preserved the advantage by striking out both Moises Sierra and Anthony Gose.

Closer Jim Johnson then pitched around a two-out single in the ninth to record his 48th save.

Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle (12-10) left with one out in the fourth inning after sustaining a right calf contusion when he was struck by a Steve Pearce comebacker. Buehrle allowed three runs and eight hits over the first three frames.

The other Jays' run came in the first inning, when a hustling Munenori Kawasaki scored from first with two outs on an innocuous pop up that was dropped by left fielder Jason Pridie.

Wieters tied the game with a leadoff blast to left in the second, and the Orioles moved ahead an inning later. Nick Markakis doubled home Brian Roberts, who led off the third with a bunt single. An infield single by Adam Jones put men on the corners for Wieters, who plated Markakis with a sacrifice fly.

Game Notes

The Blue Jays finished with a 34-47 road record. They return home to wrap up the regular season with a weekend set against the playoff-hopeful Tampa Bay Rays ... The O's conclude the season by hosting the AL East champion Boston Red Sox ... Baltimore captured the season series 10-9.
