National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at New York

(Saturday, April 5th)

Final Score: New York 6, Cincinnati 3

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Pinch-hitter Ike Davis hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday to give the New York Mets a 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Holding a 3-2 lead, the Reds sent J.J. Hoover (1-1) to the mound in the ninth. Juan Lagares led off with a walk and made his way for second when Anthony Recker put down a bunt. The throw went to second and Lagares was called out on the play, but Mets manager Terry Collins quickly asked for a challenge. The call was overturned following a video review.

Hoover then walked Ruben Tejada to load the bases for Davis, who cleared the wall in right with his first career pinch-hit home run.

"That's basically going to be my role," said Davis. "I'm obviously not going to hit a home run every time, but I have to be ready for those big events and hopefully take advantage of them."

Curtis Granderson hit his first homer as a Met in the sixth inning. Dillon Gee allowed three runs on six hits over 7 1/3 innings for New York, which has won two in a row since being swept by Washington in three games to start the season. Carlos Torres (1-0) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who are off to a 1-4 start. Ryan Ludwick added a solo homer.

Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto, who took a no-hitter into the fifth, gave up two runs on five hits while striking out nine over seven full frames.

The Mets left runners on second and third in the second inning. After walking Lagares and Tejada, Cueto was called for a balk. The Dominican right-hander responded by striking out Gee.

Gee had allowed just one hit before giving up a leadoff homer to Ludwick in the fifth.

Granderson's homer in the sixth made it 2-1 Mets. After David Wright reached base on a fielder's choice, Granderson smacked a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right.

Phillips' homer in the eighth put the Reds back on top. Pinch-hitter Chris Heisey doubled and scored on Phillips' blast to left.

"We scratched to take the lead and we just weren't able to close it out," said Reds manager Bryan Price.

Game Notes

Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton did not start due to a finger injury ... New York went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded six, while Cincinnati went 1-for-2 with RISP and left five men on base.
