National League Preview from The Sports Network

Sunday, August 18th (All times Eastern)

New York Mets (56-65) at San Diego Padres (55-68), 4:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Matt Harvey (9-4, 2.23) San Diego - Eric Stults (8-10, 3.68)

(Sports Network) - Young pitching phenom Matt Harvey will take the mound Sunday for the New York Mets in the finale of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The All-Star Harvey is coming off a loss at Los Angeles on Tuesday and allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 4-2 setback. Harvey dropped to 9-4 in 24 starts to go along with a 2.23 earned run average and is winless (0-2) in his past four road assignments.

Harvey, who is still 5-2 in 11 away starts, defeated the Padres with seven shutout innings in an 8-4 win back on April 3 and is 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two career starts against them.

New York was targeting a series win over the Padres, but suffered an 8-2 loss Saturday in the third portion of this set. Jenrry Mejia allowed one run in three innings before leaving with an arm issue and David Aardsma absorbed the loss for permitting four runs across the fourth and fifth innings.

Eric Young had two hits and scored twice, while Juan Lagares ended 2-for-4 for New York, which is 4-5 on an 11-game road trip. The Mets will visit Minnesota for a game Monday afternoon.

Mets catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, the main piece the team received in the R.A. Dickey trade this past offseason, made his major league debut to fill in for regular catcher John Buck, who was placed on paternity leave. He went hitless, but did walk twice.

"It's indescribable, man," d'Darnaud said about his first major league game. "It's one of those feelings that everyone dreams they can have and I can't even describe it. Unfortunately we got the loss, so we're going to try and come out tomorrow and win the series."

The Mets will start a nine-game homestand later this week versus Atlanta, Detroit and Philadelphia.

San Diego halted a three-game slide Saturday and won for just the third time in its last 11 tries. Edinson Volquez held the Mets to two runs in five innings for the win, Nick Hundley hit a two-run homer and Jedd Gyorko added a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Will Venable had four hits and three runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. San Diego pounded out 15 hits and will also host Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs on this 10-game homestand.

"It was good to see a bunch of guys get a couple hits," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Eric Stults hopes to get some support when he takes the hill Sunday for the Friars. Stults is 0-3 in his last five starts with back-to-back no-decisions and allowed five runs on 11 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of a 7-5 win at Colorado on Tuesday.

Stults, who has given up 16 runs in his last five starts, is 8-10 with a 3.68 ERA in 25 outings this season. He beat the Mets with five shutout innings of a 2-1 win on April 4 and is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in five career starts against them.

New York took two of three matchups from San Diego in that early April series at Citi Field.
