Description: New York closer Bobby Parnell will have Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: Steve Berthiaume, Diamondbacks.com
Insight: He'll be out for the rest of the season. Jose Valverde has been filling in at closer though free agent Joel Hanrahan could also be an option for the Mets down the road.

4/3/2014 8:25:00 PM
Description: It's 50/50 whether or not Mets closer Bobby Parnell (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery. SOURCE: ESPN New York
Insight: Either way, we aren't likely to see Parnell on a pitcher's mound any time soon. Jose Valverde will be New York's closer for the time being, though the Mets haven't provided him a save opportunity yet.

4/1/2014 12:20:00 PM
Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell has a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow.
Insight: This explains his low velocity on Monday afternoon. He's expected to rest for two weeks before throwing again, though if it doesn't improve surgery is possible. The closer's role should go to Jose Valverde.

3/26/2014 3:37:00 PM
Description: The Mets may not allow closer Bobby Parnell (neck) to pitch more than two days in a row early in the season, according to Marc Carig of Newsday.
Insight: Parnell (2.16 ERA, 22 saves) had neck surgery this offseason and is still building up his velocity, but he'll begin the season as New York's closer. Parnell only pitched three days in a row twice last season so it shouldn't affect his value much if he can't do it this year. Jose Valverde will pick up the save chances when Parnell is unavailable.

3/4/2014 6:55:00 PM
Description: New York closer Bobby Parnell (neck surgery, quad) is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Thursday morning, according to espnny.com.
Insight: Parnell (5-5, 2.16 ERA, 22 saves) hopes to be ready for Opening Day. He isn't getting much attention from fantasy owners (26th closer off the board in Yahoo rankings), but if he's ready to go at the start of the season he'll have solid value.

2/17/2014 10:25:00 AM
Description: New York reliever Bobby Parnell (neck surgery) threw about 15 pitches Monday morning, according to Mets beat reporter Marc Carig.
Insight: Parnell (5-5, 2.16 ERA, 22 saves) hopes to be ready for Opening Day. He isn't getting much attention from fantasy owners (25th closer off the board in Yahoo rankings), but if he's ready to go at the start of the season he'll be a solid value at No. 182 overall.

Description: New York reliever Bobby Parnell will undergo season-ending neck surgery. SOURCE: Adam Rubin, ESPN New York
Insight: He hasn't pitched since July. If all goes well, Parnell (5-5, 2.16 ERA, 22 saves) should be ready for the start of spring training.

8/30/2013 6:02:00 PM
Description: According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNY.com, Mets closer Bobby Parnell (neck) is unlikely to return this season.
Insight: Parnell is out with a herniated disc in his neck, and the team has yet to determine if he'll need surgery. LaTroy Hawkins is expected to get most of the save chances in the final month of the season, with Gonzalez Germen being mixed in.

8/7/2013 6:48:00 PM
Description: New York closer Bobby Parnell received an epidural injection earlier this week and is still hoping he can avoid season-ending surgery. SOURCE: ESPN New York
Insight: A neck injury sent Parnell to the DL on Tuesday and with very little left to play for, the Mets could opt to play it safe and sit him out the rest of the year. Parnell has different ideas, however, and will do whatever he can to get back in the bigs before the season ends. Stay tuned.

8/6/2013 4:38:00 PM
Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell (neck) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 31.
Insight: Parnell has a herniated disk in his neck. The team will go with a closer-by-committee while Parnell is out, manager Terry Collins said according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

8/4/2013 9:30:00 AM
Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell wan't available for the first two games of the Kansas City series and is questionable for Sunday's game against Kansas City.
Insight: He's been struggling with a stiff neck. David Aardsma and LaTroy Hawkins seem like the most likely candidates to pitch the ninth inning in Parnell's absence.

Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell won't be available for the first two games of the Kansas City series. SOURCE: Jorge Castillo, Newark Star-Ledger
Insight: He's been struggling with a stiff neck. David Aardsma and LaTroy Hawkins seem like the most likely candidates to pitch the ninth inning in Parnell's absence.

8/2/2013 9:28:00 AM
Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell is questionable for Friday's game against Kansas City due to a stiff neck.
Insight: Parnell was 4-1 with nine saves and a 1.85 ERA at the end of May, but he's 5-5 through the end of July. His name was mentioned in a few trade rumors, so perhaps with the deadline passed he'll start pitching well again - after he gets healthy.

6/9/2013 5:43:00 PM
Description: Mets closer Bobby Parnell allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in an inning of work Sunday and was handed his third loss of the season by Miami.
Insight: Parnell was 4-1 with nine saves and a 1.85 ERA at the end of May, but he has gone 0-2 with a blown save and a 15.45 ERA over his last three appearances.

3/14/2013 9:55:00 AM
Description: Even Frank Francisco (elbow) is ready to anoint Bobby Parnell the closer. After throwing off a bullpen mound for the second time Wednesday, he motioned to Parnell's locker and said "he is the closer." SOURCE: New York Post
Insight: Parnell had a solid season in 2012 (5-4, 2.49 ERA) and even had an opportunity to close a few games last year. Meanwhile, Francisco had a 5.53 ERA in 42 1/3 innings and is no lock to be ready for Opening Day. He's not ready to appear in spring training games yet.

2/12/2013 2:33:00 PM
Description: New York Mets manager Terry Collins told WFAN he wants reliever Bobby Parnell to be the team's closer.
Insight: Parnell had a solid season in 2012 (5-4, 2.49 ERA) and even had an opportunity to close a few games last year. With Frank Francisco currently shut down with an elbow problem, Parnell has a good chance to grab the closer role and keep it with a good sprin and early season effort.

1/17/2013 8:44:00 PM
Description: Thursday the Mets came to an agreement with reliever Bobby Parnell on a new one-year, $1.7 million deal.
Insight: By doing so, the two sides were able to avoid arbitration. Parnell had a solid season in 2012 (5-4, 2.49 ERA) and even had an opportunity to close a few games. He'll likely open the season as a setup man to closer Frank Francisco (5.53, 23 saves).

9/28/2012 5:36:00 PM
Description: The Mets will utilize Bobby Parnell in the closer role for the final week of the season, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.
Insight: Frank Francisco (elbow) hasn't been ruled out for the season yet but it's unlikely he returns. Parnell has a 2.64 ERA in 64 2/3 innings this season.

Cold7/17/2012 10:54:00 PM
Description: New York closer Bobby Parnell blew the save Tuesday night as the Mets fell to the Nationals 5-4 in extra innings.
Insight: Parnell (2-2, 3.19) has followed up a streak of nine scoreless outings in a row by blowing saves in each of his last two appearances. If Parnell continues to struggle like this he could quickly lose his grasp on the closer's job.

6/24/2012 8:04:00 PM
Description: Mets reliever Bobby Parnell will be used as the team's closer until Frank Francisco returns from the disabled list.
Insight: Parnell (1-1, 3.30 ERA) recorded six saves last year so this role isn't completely foreign to him. He's second in the National League in holds this season with 15.
