MLB Game Summary - Cleveland at Atlanta

(Tuesday, August 27th)

Final Score: Atlanta 2, Cleveland 0

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Alex Wood spun 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the Atlanta Braves blanked the Cleveland Indians, 2-0, in the opener of a three- game interleague set at Turner Field.

Wood (3-2) gave up five hits and four walks while fanning five to earn his first win since Aug. 4.

"I felt alright. I got a little tired at the end, but stuff wise I thought it was a lot better than last week in New York," said Wood, who gave up six hits and walked two over six innings in his last start. "I think most of the walks I had was all just fastballs out of the zone. It was just one of those things where I had to battle tonight."

Elliot Johnson had a two-run triple for the Braves, who have won two in a row after dropping four of five.

Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth to notch his league-leading 42nd save.

With the win, Atlanta remained a healthy 13 games ahead of the Washington Nationals atop the NL East standings.

Danny Salazar (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up three hits, including Johnson's triple, over four innings. Cleveland lost for just the second time in its last seven contests.

Atlanta broke through in the second inning. Brian McCann walked and Joey Terdoslavich singled to put runners on the corners with one out. After Andrelton Simmons lined out, Johnson smacked a triple deep to right field that tipped off Drew Stubbs' glove to clear the bases.

The Indians, who went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base, wasted opportunities to score late in the game.

In the fifth, Jason Kipnis ripped a two-out double to left field, but Carlos Santana followed with a groundout to short.

In the sixth, the Tribe put a pair of runners on with two outs, but Scott Downs came in for Wood and was able to fan pinch-hitter Jason Giambi to get out of the jam.

"In a game like that, you have to get a two-out hit and a big hit. This is a pretty spacious ball park that plays pretty fair. We'd like to create more opportunities and then cash in on them. They have a pretty good bullpen, once you get to those guys its pretty tough to put runs up," said Indians manager Terry Francona.

The Atlanta bullpen allowed just one runner the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Game Notes

Atlanta took two of three from the Indians the last time these teams squared off back in 2007 ... Wood allowed just three runs over 30 innings in August ... Wood hasn't lost since June 26 ... Tribe shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to eight games ... Santana went 0- for-2 and had his seven-game hitting streak snapped.
