National League Game Summary - San Diego at Washington

(Thursday, April 24th)

Final Score: San Diego 4, Washington 3 (12 innings)

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Xavier Nady's RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals in the opener of a four-game set.

Jedd Gyorko reached on a single with one out in the 12th off Craig Stammen (0-1). He then stole second and moved to third on Jose Lobaton's throwing error. Nady followed with a single to plate the game-winning run.

Bryce Harper opened the bottom of the inning with a double to left field. Harper lifted what appeared to be a routine fly ball to left-center, but left fielder Tommy Medica tripped, allowing the ball to fall in for a hit. Medica, who is used primarily as a first baseman, entered the game as a defensive replacement in the 11th.

The Nationals, who left 14 runners on base, couldn't cash in on the scoring opportunity. Huston Street struck out Tyler Moore then got Lobaton to line into a game-ending double-play. Lobaton roped a liner to the left side, but Everth Cabrera was there to snare the ball and double Harper off at second.

"We hit some balls hard, and right at people," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "If we give ourselves that many opportunities, we're going to score runs. It (just) didn't happen tonight."

Street picked up his eighth save of the season. Alex Torres (1-0) recorded the final two outs of the 11th inning to earn the win.

"This was an interesting one for sure, one where you had to be creative as you went along," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "Along the way, there were a lot of clutch pitches from both sides. Both teams were stressed. This was a weird one."

Eric Stults surrendered 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings, but held the Nats to just two runs in the start. Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed three runs on five hits in the setback.

The Nats broke through in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Denard Span reached on a force out, stole second and took third on Stults' throwing error. Rendon followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring Span across.

The Padres countered with a run in the fourth. Chris Denorfia singled and Seth Smith followed with an RBI double to right.

San Diego tacked on two more in the sixth. Stults opened the frame with a double and Smith walked with two outs to put two on with two outs. Yasmani Grandal followed with a double to right to clear the bases.

Danny Espinosa and Adam LaRoche hit solo homers in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to tie the game.

Game Notes

San Diego was 2-for-9 with RISP ... Padres third baseman Chase Headley left the game in the second with a strained right calf and Smith left in the 11th with a groin strain ... The Nats were 0-for-16 with RISP.
