Dodgers aim to extend success over Padres

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers look to maintain their dominance over the San Diego Padres when the two National League West foes commence a three-game series Friday at Petco Park.

The Dodgers are 9-4 against the Padres this season and have won four of the six meetings at Petco Park.

Los Angeles completed a quick two-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with Wednesday's 3-1 win behind another gem from staff ace Clayton Kershaw, who delivered eight stellar innings and struck out 10 batters. Kershaw allowed one unearned run to improve to 16-3 on the season.

"There were guys on base all night," said Kershaw. "I had to work out of jams. Fortunately I got through eight innings."

Kenley Jansen struck out two batters in the ninth en route to his 38th save.

Scott Van Slyke belted a solo homer, but left the game in the fourth inning with a mild right ankle sprain.

"Maybe a couple days. I've done it before ... ice it, meds, elevate," Van Slyke said afterward.

Matt Kemp stroked a two-run double for the Dodgers, who have won five of their last six games and possess a 4 1/2-game cushion on San Francisco.

Dan Haren will try to keep Los Angeles on track when he takes the mound Friday and is 11-10 with a 4.44 earned run average. Haren has won three of his last four trips to the hill and threw seven innings of one-run ball in last Friday's 6-2 win over the New York Mets.

Haren has a 6-6 mark in 14 road starts and is 6-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 19 career games (18 starts) against the Padres. He is 1-1 in three starts against San Diego this season.

The Padres, meanwhile, have won two in a row and three of four games, and recently took two of three meetings with the Milwaukee Brewers to start a 10- game homestand.

San Diego posted a 3-2 win in 10 innings on Wednesday, as Rene Rivera drove in Yasmani Grandal for the game-winning run. Rivera also tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth, while Grandal and Jedd Gyorko finished with two hits apiece for the Padres.

Dale Thayer got the win with a scoreless 10th inning and starting pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne struck out nine batters in seven innings of work. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, and scattered six hits.

"Rene Rivera, what a night," said Padres manager Bud Black. "I thought Despaigne did well. I thought tonight that he was the best since his first game. It was all about the fastball tonight for him."

The Friars will also host Arizona for four games on this homestand and hope Andrew Cashner can bounce back when he takes the ball Friday. Cashner is winless (0-5) in his last nine trips to the mound and gave up a pair of runs in five innings of Saturday's 5-2 loss at Arizona.

Cashner has faced the Dodgers 15 times (4 starts) in his career, going 0-2 with a 1.35 earned run average. The right-hander is 2-2 in seven home starts.
