Greene's Day: Yanks rookie shuts down Orioles

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Shane Greene once again provided a huge lift to the New York Yankees' injury-plagued rotation, firing 7 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 3-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Five days after twirling six innings of two-run ball to defeat Cleveland in his first major league start, Greene (2-0) racked up nine strikeouts while limiting Baltimore's power-packed lineup to just four singles in a strong encore.

"I try not to think too much. I try to keep everything simple," Greene said of his approach. "Just go out there and make one pitch at a time."

The rookie got help from a few of New York's wily veterans, as Mark Teixeira and Jacoby Ellsbury came through with run-scoring doubles and Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. Brian McCann finished with three hits in the victory.

Baltimore's bats, on the other hand, never got untracked. The Orioles mustered just five hits -- with Nick Markakis accounting for two of them -- and fanned 12 times in all in the loss, just the third in 12 games for the current AL East leaders.

The 4-5-6 spots in the order were particularly punchless, with Nelson Cruz, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy combining to go 0-for-12 with nine strikeouts.

Greene began his impressive outing with 10 straight outs and set down 14-of-15 batters before giving up his first two hits of the game, consecutive singles by Manny Machado and Ryan Flaherty in the fifth inning.

The young right-hander was working with a 1-0 lead at the time, courtesy of Teixeira's two-out double off Chris Tillman in the third inning that brought home Brett Gardner, though Jeter was thrown at the plate attempting to score as well on the play.

Baltimore threatened again in the sixth, as Markakis and Pearce each singled to put two on with none out. Greene beared down, however, getting All-Star Adam Jones to bounce into a double play and striking out Cruz to maintain New York's 1-0 edge.

The Yankees then gave the 25-year-old some breathing room in the seventh. Kelly Johnson singled, moved to second on a Tillman wild pitch and crossed the plate on Jeter's sharp two-out single to left. Ellsbury then greeted reliever T.J. McFarland with a double into the right-field corner to extend New York's advantage to 3-0.

Tillman (7-5) was charged with all three runs over 6 2/3 innings and had a four-start unbeaten stretch come to an end.

"I think the one area that's been more of a challenge for him is the walks," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Tillman.

David Robertson polished off the shutout and notched his 23rd save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth that concluded with K's of Davis and Hardy.

Game Notes

The Yankees are now 19-4 in road games started by rookie pitchers this season ... Tillman, who had gone 2-0 with two no-decisions over his last four starts, fell to 1-5 at Camden Yards this season ... Orioles catcher Nick Hundley had an eight-game hit streak halted after going 0-for-2 ... Baltimore will recall Kevin Gausman from Triple-A Norfolk to start Sunday's series finale, with the club needing to shuffle its rotation after placing Ubaldo Jimenez on the disabled list Friday.
