National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at Washington

(Monday, May 19th)

Final Score: Cincinnati 4, Washington 3 (15 innings)

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Todd Frazier's two-run homer in the 15th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

The Nationals tied the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning off hard-throwing Reds closer Aroldis Chapman but were robbed of potential game- winning hits in the 12th and 14th on diving catches by Brandon Phillips and Billy Hamilton.

Phillips led off the 15th with a single off Ross Detwiler (0-2) and Frazier knocked a one-out changeup into the seats behind left-center field for his eighth homer of the season.

"He threw a pitch in there, the guy got a homer. It happens," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "The changeup stayed up."

Logan Ondrusek (1-2) pitched the last two innings for the Reds, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

"Every player on the team played some sort of role in that game," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "The defense was phenomenal."

Ondrusek gave up a run in the 15th after Jayson Werth doubled leading off and scored when Greg Dobbs hit a pop-fly that dropped in between three fielders in shallow right.

The game ended hours after both starting pitchers finished good outings.

Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs on six hits and a walk in seven innings for Washington and fellow righty Mike Leake allowed one run on seven hits and a walk in 6 2/3 frames for Cincinnati.

Danny Espinosa doubled off Chapman to start the ninth inning, went to third on Kevin Frandsen's line out and scored on Scott Hairston's sacrifice fly to left to tie the game for the Nationals.

Phillips, the Reds second baseman, ended the 12th inning with a diving catch up the middle on Wilson Ramos' humpback line drive, stranding the potential winning run on third base.

In the 14th, with a runner at third again, Hamilton stretched out to catch Anthony Rendon's line drive to right-center field.

"Sometimes you wish you could steer it after you hit it," Williams said.

Earlier, Hamilton was caught in a rundown trying to steal home in the seventh with Cincinnati up 2-0 and was tagged out at third base, ending the inning.

Strasburg appeared to speed up his delivery when he noticed Hamilton breaking for home, raising a question about whether or not he should have been called for a balk, which the Reds appeared to argue.

Leake gave up a one-out single to Nate McLouth in the bottom of the seventh and threw a wild pitch, moving McLouth to second base. Leake came out after giving up a two-out RBI single to Denard Span for Washington's first run.

Ramos, the Nationals catcher, made a diving catch on the third base side of home plate after Hamilton popped up a bunt attempt on the game's first pitch.

But an ill-advised throw by Ramos to second base after he blocked a pitch in the dirt led to Cincinnati's first run in the fourth inning.

Ramos was trying to throw out Brayan Pena, who had broken for second on the low pitch. Frazier scored easily from third on the throw before the Nationals got Pena in a rundown.

Strasburg hit Zack Cozart with his first pitch in the fifth, leading to the second Reds run. Cozart landed at third following Leake's bunt and Hamilton's single and scored on Skip Schumaker's hit to center field to make it 2-0.

Game Notes

The two teams combined to go just 4-for-42 with runners in scoring position, and left 27 men on base ... Hamilton swiped second base in the seventh inning for his 16th steal of the season ... Former MVP Joey Votto missed his fourth straight game for the Reds because of a left quad strain ... The Reds won for the first time in Leake's last six starts ... The game lasted 4 hours and 58 minutes.
