National League Preview from The Sports Network

Wednesday, July 2 (All times Eastern)

Colorado Rockies (36-48) at Washington Nationals (45-38), 6:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Tyler Matzek (1-2, 4.24) Washington - Doug Fister (6-2, 2.83)

(SportsNetwork.com) - Doug Fister takes the mound on Wednesday night with a chance to extend a recent streak of red-hot pitching for the Washington Nationals.

The veteran right-hander gets his chance at Nationals Park, where the hosts will entertain the Colorado Rockies while aiming to cap off a sweep of the three-game series.

The Nationals have lost just three times in their last 14 games while the pitching staff has combined for a stingy 2.22 earned run average. Fister has three of those victories, and the offensive side of things has been boosted by the return of some injured talent, too.

Washington has 19 hits and has scored 14 runs in the initial two games of the series, buoyed at least in part by Bryce Harper, who came back Monday after missing 57 games with an injured thumb.

Fister himself missed the season's first five weeks with a strained lat muscle, and he follows the recent Washington trio of Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann, who've combined to allow just two earned runs in their last 20 2/3 innings.

Fister has split two decisions in his own last three outings while maintaining a 3.15 ERA, but he's won four in a row at Nationals Park while trimming the ERA to 1.93.

He got a no-decision in his last outing on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs after allowing three runs in six innings of Washington's 5-4 loss.

Fister beat Colorado in his lone career opportunity while with the Detroit Tigers in 2012.

He's opposed by Tyler Matzek, who starts for the fifth time in his brief career.

The lefty opened with a seven-inning stint against Atlanta on June 11, but is 0-2 in three starts since with a 4.96 ERA.

His last start came Friday against Milwaukee, as he tossed six innings and got a no-decision in the Rockies' 3-2 loss.

Overall, Colorado's 4.96 starting ERA is the worst in the majors.

"Every day you can't worry about what happened yesterday," first baseman Justin Morneau said. "You're not going to change it. If you start thinking that way, that's when you get in trouble."

On Tuesday, Strasburg pitched into the eighth inning to stretch his home unbeaten streak, as the Nationals dominated the Rockies, 7-1.

Strasburg (7-6) gave up five hits, including a homer to DJ LeMahieu in the eighth, and had eight strikeouts over his 7 2/3 innings. He is 6-0 over his last nine home starts with his only defeat at Nationals Park coming April 5 against Atlanta.

Jayson Werth had a pair of doubles and drove in three for the Nationals. Anthony Rendon added a two-run double.

Christian Friedrich (0-3) surrendered five hits and five runs over 3 1/3 innings for the Rockies.
