National League Game Summary - New York at Atlanta

(Monday, June 30)

Final Score: Atlanta 5, New York 3

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddie Freeman walked three times and finished with two RBI in the Atlanta Braves' 5-3 win over the New York Mets on Monday.

Alex Wood struck out seven and gave up three runs in six innings for the Braves, winners of a season-high fifth straight game following a four-game sweep in Philadelphia. Anthony Varvaro (3-1) recorded the win for a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his 25th save.

"We had a great road trip. It's always good to come home after a long one," said Braves outfielder B.J. Upton. "The pitching staff did another great job tonight."

The Mets led 3-1 through seven innings but Atlanta's offense came alive in the bottom of the eighth against Jeurys Familia (1-3), who was plagued by three New York errors in the inning.

Justin Upton and Jason Heyward singled to start the frame before Familia fielded a comeback grounder to the mound from Chris Johnson and threw low to second base, allowing all three runners to reach safely with no outs.

Tommy La Stella then smacked a base hit up the middle and the normally sure- handed Juan Lagares fumbled the ball in center as the tying run came across.

The bases were loaded with two outs when Andrelton Simmons chopped one to third base. Eric Campbell jumped and appeared to have the ball in his glove, but it squirted free. He recovered quickly and fired to first, but not in time to record the out. Johnson crossed the plate on the play, giving the Braves a 4-3 lead and chasing Familia from the game.

Dana Eveland came on and walked Freeman to force in the final run.

"When you're developing young players, once in a while you're going to have a hiccup," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "There's going to be some mistakes made and that comes with the growth part of it."

Zack Wheeler yielded four hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Mets, allowing just a run despite walking five.

The Mets put a run across in each of the first three innings against Wood.

Curtis Granderson smacked the third pitch of the game over the wall in right center for a leadoff home run. Chris Young then opened the second with a single to right and scored two batters later on Travis d'Arnaud's two-bagger to the wall in center.

The Mets loaded the bases in the third on a pair of singles and a walk. Young drove a sacrifice fly to deep center, plating Daniel Murphy for a 3-0 lead.

B.J. Upton and Simmons hit consecutive singles to start the home fifth for Atlanta, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Freeman lifted a sac fly to left to put Atlanta on the board, but Wheeler got Justin Upton to ground into a double-play to limit the Braves to just the one run.

Game Notes

The Braves have won seven of eight ... The Mets have dropped five of six ... Mets third baseman David Wright missed his fourth straight game with a bruised rotator cuff in his left shoulder ... Granderson and Murphy had two hits apiece in the loss ... Atlanta catcher Evan Gattis will miss at least two weeks after an MRI revealed a bulging thoracic disk.
