American League Game Summary - New York at Toronto

(Saturday, August 30)

Final Score: Toronto 2, New York 0

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Bautista's first-inning homer stood up, as Drew Hutchison and Aaron Sanchez combined on a one-hit shutout to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday at Rogers Centre.

Hutchison (9-11) surrendered only a fourth-inning double to Mark Teixeira, walked two and hit a pair of batters. He also struck out nine before Sanchez retired all six men he faced to notch his first big league save.

"It seemed like his fastball was getting on our hitters a lot quicker than they thought," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Hutchison. "He threw the ball really well."

The Jays bounced back from Friday's 6-3 loss in the series opener and won for only the second time in their last six games.

Michael Pineda (3-3) pitched six-plus solid innings for New York in the hard- luck loss. He allowed seven hits and both runs, and struck out three without issuing a walk.

New York fell to 3-3 on a seven-game road trip that ends Sunday. The Yankees played without Jacoby Ellsbury, who hurt his ankle sliding into home during Friday's game.

"Everyone else has to step up," added Girardi about his team's lack of offense without Ellsbury, who is batting .455 with four homers and 11 RBI in his last 11 games.

Girardi noted that Ellsbury's injury was serious enough to possibly land him on the disabled list, but rosters will be expanding on Monday.

The Jays grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Bautista's 28th homer and fourth in as many games. Jose Reyes led off with a single and reached third with two outs before scoring on Bautista's bullet off the facade of the second deck in left field.

Hutchison was cruising and retired the first 11 batters he faced before hitting Carlos Beltran with a pitch with two outs in the fourth. Teixeira followed with a double and Brian McCann was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Martin Prado flied harmlessly to center.

"It was a good swing by Prado, he just missed it," said Girardi.

Pineda settled down after the first and yielded just three more hits from the second through the sixth inning before running into trouble in the seventh. Edwin Encarnacion reached on an infield single to start the inning and raced to third on Dioner Navarro's double. Shawn Kelley took over on the mound for New York retired the next three batters to keep it a two-run game.

The Yankees went down meekly against Sanchez over the final two innings with three strikeouts.

Game Notes

Hutchison improved to 2-3 against the Yankees this season ... Bautista had been 1-for-11 lifetime against Pineda entering the game ... Pineda gave up more than six hits for the first time in his last 16 starts ... The Yankees' previous season-low for hits in a game was three, set five different times ... Toronto will try for just its second series win in its last nine on Sunday. The Jays are 1-6-1 in series play since July 31.
